Is it possible to look up a census by putting in only the street number and address. I've tried but get no results but just wondered if it was at all possible to do that.
I have been trying to do this for the 1881 Census (England) and the 1891 Census England for 32 Mill Lane St Pauls Deptford, London and for 32 Lamberts Buildings St Pauls Deptford, London to find out what surnames come up. Sad

Maybe I'm on a 'wild goose chase'? Confused

I have never tried for an English census before. Lets see if we can come up with anything for you.

Emmy,
Don't know about that kind of search on a census, but have you tried old editions of Kelly's Directories or even electoral rolls?

This site might be of some use too >1891 Census - Streets<

This one could possibly be of interest too...

Is there England census information or anything prior to 1846? I have located pretty much all after 1846.

You could check >THIS< site out... it tells us that a form of Census began in 1801... though of course the first census was in fact the Doomesday Book...

Many Thanks for the links Carole
What I'm trying to find is I've 2 addresses for when my G.parents first arrived in London with my G.father's brother and his family. I did enquire once and it seemed that 32 Mill Lane and 32 Lamberts Buildings was the same house what I was trying to verify is if I can find a census for 32 Mill Lane and one for 32 Lamberts Buildings and its the same person's name then I'll know for certain my grandparents and my grandfathers brother lived in the same house when they first came here.
(On my dad's birth certificate its 32 Mill Lane and when my grandfather's brother registered the death of one of his children the address was 32 Lamberts Buildings) I have found 32 Mill Lane on an old map but I cant see Lamberts Buildings.)
Emmy
ps on the list of the streets from one of the links: 32 Mill Lane is in St Pauls Deptford Greenwich and Lamberts Buildings is listed too +St Pauls Deptford Greenwich- could it be that Lambert Buildings is where 32 Mill Lane was?

Hi Emmy,
I've been hunting for documents that 'might' answer your question but with little luck. If you at least had name or two it might be easier...
But I did find this set of archives: >HERE<

but don't ask me how to use them, you'll have to do that I think....

LOOK AT ENTRY NO. 86 ON THIS PAGE.... IT MIGHT BE USEFUL!

Here's another group of 'old' maps that you can (on most) navigate around and see the old Deptford/Greenwich..

Hope these might be useafull too Emmy!

Hi Emmy and Carole -

I have these 2 films at my FHC..........

Computer printout of Deptford, St. Paul amd Woolwich Independent, Kent, Eng England, Kent, Deptford - Church records - Indexes 6906348 1
Computer printout of Deptford, St. Paul amd Woolwich Independent, Kent, Eng England, Kent, Deptford - Church records - Indexes 6906565 1

would this be of any help? There are no date spreads for the films but maybe the people you're looking for would be listed with their addresses. Let me know if you'd like to me to look for info....I'll be going to my center this week and be happy to see if I can find anything for you.

Carole many thanks for those links. They're very interesting I tried no 86 and I got even further where it said there was a list of burials for St Pauls Detford but for some reason I cant get into the detailed information, will try again later but there is so much information to be found on those two links I've bookmarked them. Thanks again Carole. kiss

Billie I dont think the Church Records would help but that was so kind of you to offer to look things up for me kiss

The reason their names at that address wont be on the 1881 or 1891 census is they were in Italy in 1881- I know that for certain,-they came to London around 1883-1885 and it would be in that period they lived at 32 Mill Lane/32 Lamberts Buildings.
(Names were Giovanni DiFilippis and Tomasso DiFilippis/DeFilippo?)
Just very curious to know if Mill Lane and Lamberts buildings were recorded separately in the census.

This link shows where Mill Lane is but there's no mention of Lamberts Buildings.
Above the 'L' section there is TOOTLEY STREET - Mill Lane is one of the streets off Tootley Street.
Emmy

This info from a friend about Lamberts Buildings and Mill Lane, Deptford off Tooley Street....

It's still there in 1881. If you can look at the census you can probably get some idea of where it was by the schedule and the surrrounding streets.

Mill Lane = Brookmill Road, Deptford/Lewisham SE8 on the modern maps. Had it's name changed over years.

OK - PROBLEM SOLVED....
Emmy, I've sent you two pages via e-mail, direct from Ancestry that show Mill Lane AND Lambert Buildings - there is an Italian living there called (I think?) Pietro(e) DI Luca (?) and his wife Tresa (?)

But if you have access to the 1891 census enter this person (below) and it will give you that page.... there are TWO pages, one after the other, showing Lamberts Buildings in the middle of Mill Lane..

Name: William Mahoney
Age: 40
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1851
Relation: Head
Gender: Male
Where born: Deptford, Kent, England

Civil Parish: St Paul Deptford
Ecclesiastical parish: St John
Town: Deptford
County/Island: London
Country: England

YOUR A GENIUS CAROLE kiss kiss kiss
I'm not entirely sure now that the two families lived in the same house! because 32 Mill Lane is listed AND 32 Lamberts Buildings is listed too. So I take it they wouldnt take records from the same house twice?!
One thing for sure though if they didnt share the same house they definatley lived very close to each other. I do know that in 1889 My Grandparents moved to a house in Nelson Street which was not too far away from Mill Lane.
Why oh why could they not have lived there during a year when a census was taken! By the time the 1891 Census was taken they had moved again and they were living at 5 Rye Dwellings in Camberwell London and the name on the Census then was DOPHLIS not Difilippis how on earth my cousin in Australia found it is still a mystery to me. I tried to look it up and when I typed in the address the result came up as number 5 Rye Dwellings as being 'EMPTY' Genealogy certainly keeps the wee grey cells working overtime.
Many Many Thanks Carole for all your help.
Emmy
ps Sad to say I didnt get the email you sent Sad
