Hello my name is Kristen Melissari and I am researching my family tree. My last know relative came over from V.S. Giovanni, Italy So. In 1920. I am pretty sure that this is Villa San Giovanni, Reggio Calabria. His name is Enrico Melissari and was born on June 16, 1886 and died in New York in March 1987. He came through Ellis Island on the Dante Aligheri on March 22, 1920. His port of departure was Napoli. He was 23 years old and served in the Italian Army during WWI. Most of his siblings died in the earthquake of 1908 but I do not know how many or their names. I also have is social securyitynumber. His last known residence was here in New York in Flushing, Queens. If you could please assist me in retrieving this information or let me know how I can go about it I would greatly appreciate it.

kristen33,

Welcome to Gente!

Have you tried writing away for Enrico's Military Records(registro di leva and the registro dei fogli matricolari)? They will provide the name of his parents in case you don't have that as well as a lot of other great information. I believe this is the address where to write:

Archivio di Stato
Provincia di Reggio Calabria
Argine Destro Annunziata 59/61
89100 Reggio Calabria, Italia

You may then consider writing to the comune and requesting the storica di famiglia which there is a charge for unfortunately.

Comune di San Giovanni
Via Nazionale
89018 San Giovanni (RC)
Italia
0965 79341 fax: 0965 79341
Email: info @ comune.villasangiovanni.rc.it

Another option you may try is ordering the microfilms from your local family history center. Hopefully you can see this link:

www.familysearch.org/E...umns=*,0,0

If not, go to www.familysearch.org
Click on the top tab that says Library. Click on Family History
Library Catalog. Then click on Place search. Type in Via San Giovanni and you will get two hits. Choose the bottom one that is for Reggio Calabria. Click on this: Italy, Reggio di Calabria, Villa San Giovanni - Civil registration and then click on Registri dello stato civile, 1809-1910 Villa San Giovanni (Reggio di Calabria). Ufficio dello stato civile

Then you can look through it and view related notes.

Hope this helps.
