In speaking with another researcher at the FHC, he suggested looking at Notary records as a way to obtain data back further than availaible through Microfilmed docs for my Dad's hometown in the Provincia di Bari....has anyone done this? Are the records available from the Municipio or must I go to the Provincial Archives. If from the Municipio, would there be another Office (other than Stato Civile or Anagrafe) that maintains these records? Would they be available to someone requesting them from abroad or do you need to request them in person.

As I had previously mentioned, there seems there is no way to access Church records until the current priest dies oe retires, so that resource seems to be blocked for the near term future.

thanks for any advice.

The Dowry is one of the record types that was filed with the Notary.

Hi,

This is interesting, and not an avenue I considered exploring before reading this post. I have an ancestor who was a notaro of Molfetta around 1820 and I once come across an article on Molfetta Live IT website a kind of history for schools page. It was about early wells pools and cisterns in Molfetta. My ancestor was mentioned in the article with the page referencing the Notary records archived at the Municipal Records of Molfetta.
Point is if the schools have access then they must be accessible to the public.
I wonder if you could email the municpal archives for your comune regarding specific Notary information.

Mark

Here is a list concerning the notary records kept in the Archivio di Stato di Bari: www.archiviodistatobar...econda.htm (click on "Patrimonio documentario", then on the "+" of "archivi notarili" - fourth line). Look if "your" town is present.
The research in the notary records is very fascinating but not easy and not short!

HiDonna,

I did go to the link last night and to be honest, I wasn't sure as to what I needed to request.....I tried using a couple of terms I found on the web such as rivelli (I think it means taxes) and Atti Notarili......I also tried using my surname and also Corato with no results. What I am trying to find are any records that might be useful in finding additional data on my ancestors who lived in Corato....I have gotten back to Pasquale Miscioscia who was born circa 1750.....I found his death record from 1803 so I am estimating his year of birth.
