Good morning. I am now stumped and need some suggestions. I have been trying to locate the comune where my 3x great grandparents passed away.

No luck so far. They were born abt. 1773-1775 in Roccapiemonte, Italy. I have located 2 of their children's birth records but believe there were more children born ealier than there are records for (prior to 1806). My 2x great grandfather was born 1811. His parents ages were 38 and 37 at his birth. The Salerno Archives has searched several times to locate a death record for either of them but with no success.

I know my 2x great grandfather and his entire family moved to Castellammare di Stabia about 1852-1860. I find no record there for my 3x great grandparents death. As usual, I do not get a response from the comune itself. Only from the Archives.

They were still alive when my 2x great grandfather married in 1834. I am wondering if they were really born in Roccapiemonte and not, in fact, in another comune/province (i.e. Avellano or Napoli?).

The Salerno Archives has been very thorough in their searches for me most of the time with only a few minor slips. There was not mention of the 3x great grandparents in the Rescigno Family List - "Stato d' Anime 1855"
from the Church. They did not show in that household but may have had their own. Is that a possibility? Don't know.

Thanks for any assistance or ideas.

I am not sure of the town size you are talking about but I would not count them out just because they did not show up in the Anime of 1 church. Some towns hold all the records of all the churches in 1 location. I know in my grandfather's town there are church records held at at least 3 different churches, probably more. If you take into consideration that the borders of all the towns surrounding my grandfather's town shifted a lot in the early 1800's then the possibilities expand even more. The same could have happened in your case. Does the LDS have records available for these towns in Salerno? I hate to say this but you may have to search town by town on the microfilms.

Does the 1834 marriage act state his parents comune after their name?

Have you tried looking for processetti for the children you do know of to see if there might be information there?

The marriage act for my 2x great grandparents is only from church records. The book containing the civil marriage act is under restoration and not searchable at this time. I was told by the Archives to check back in a year.

I wrote the priest of the church in the comune and he explained that the containing the records burned down at the turn of the century (1900). I did not clearly understand how he was able to obtain a copy of the church marriage. The little frazione where this took place is Padre Alfano outside of Roccapiemonte.

I was hoping the Archives would have better luck locating the death record of the 3x great grandparents. LDS did not microfilm any of that area. The Campania Province is a dead area for them it seems.

I have emailed back and forth with Riccardo on this subject. He has made many attempts by phone to talk with the Civil Office Director but with no luck. Hopefully, he will be successful on his return from his vacation.

Last time I checked, the province of Salerno is not on film. The bishop there won't allow the LDS access to the films for that province.

Boy, is that the Truth! The various comune Civil Office Directors are not much better in assisting in that Province either.

There are various reasons why people would want to obtain copies of public records. For some people, it is so that they can learn about their family history. For others, it is because they need a copy of their birth, death records. There are many websites providing free birth & death records online..

Death records are often wanted just to complete the family tree information. If you believe the record will provide extra detail you may be disappointed. Civil death acts usually contain the age of the deceased, their parents names if known by the person reporting the death (sometimes the funeral service operators don't know or give incorrect information) and sometimes the spouses name. If you already have the above information the death record won't be of any particular interest. If there was an earthquake around the time of their death their bodies may not have been identified and therefore there will be no death record. Just to add a point of interest. If a person dies in another town (in a hospital for instance) they may be buried there rather than taken to their home town. Even today a tax must be paid to every town that a body passes through on its way to the cemetery.

Thanks for the information Ann. Besides the date of death what I am primarily looking for is the Parents or Parent name. I have several unattached families I believe connect back to that time. The death period would deal with about 1835-1845, maybe to 1850. Just have my fingers crossed.
