I have located birth records of my ancestors in Bagheria and hope to find out if there are any living relatives.

Has anyone been to Bagheria? The birth records show this street name 29 Lercara Street as the place of birth...

My ancestors that I know about and are:

Giovanni La Barbera born abt 1845, his wife Sebastiani Gargano born abt 1851, their children Gaetano (my great grandfather), Giovanni, Agnese, Giuseppa, Antonio.

My family tells me that Gaetano went back to Sicily to once to assign his interest in the olive farm to his relatives who stayed behind, so maybe they owned an olive farm?

John I don't know if you already have this or not............italian white pages for La Barbera's currently living in Bagheria. It gives you the names, numbers and addresses. You might want to write letters to these families to introduce yourself and see if there is a connection.

By the way, I spoke to the wife of a Giuseppe D'Amato- she told me that Giuseppa La Barbera and Giuseppe D'Amato where her husband's grandparents- he was not in when I called- she seemed a little suspicious about my call- perhaps you can write to them (in Italian- which I can help you with) before your trip and explain your family history so as to make them feel at ease and hopefully agree to meet with you.

Giuseppe D'Amato
90011 Bagheria (PA) - Via Lo Bue Giuseppe, 62 Italy.

Tel: 091 905743

I also spoke to a Gaetano La Barbera
who was quite friendly and told me that most La Barbera's in town are related and originally come from one family- his father's name was Ignazio and his grandfather, Giovanni- he went on to say that he would be happy to meet with you when you visit. We do not know exactly how you are related since we need the town hall records but they not be as close as the grandchildren of Giuseppa La Barbera.

You can find the listings of the other D'Amato's and LaBarbera's at the Italian white pages site:
www.paginebianche.it

Just type in the last name in the first box shown and the town in the last box.

Till next time- ciao- Emilio

Gaetano La Barbera
90011 Bagheria (PA) - Via Mozart Wolfang Amedeus, 8 Italy
Tel: 091 903056

I would like to go within one year, so if not this summer next summer for sure. I do not want to wait too long. I would like to have my research done and potential relatives contactred before I go of course so I can make the most of the visit. The forums have been a tremendous help in accelerating my research so maybe I will make it sooner than later!
