KEY WORDS: Castiglione Di Sicilia, Francavilla, Albany, New York, Lombardo, La Maestra (aka Lamaestra), Zumbo, Giufre, LoMonaco (aka Lomonoco), Scavera, Frisina, Marino, Giosa, Sicily.

On my next trip to Castiglione Di Sicilia, I will spend a few weeks at the Comune doing some research. If anyone has an interest in any of the above names, I am happy to look them up for you. If you have any questions, please don’t be afraid to ask me. My email address is vlo @ tpg.com.au

Hopefully the following information will be of use to someone.

My goal is to identify the Lombardo and Zumbo side of my family that moved to Albany, New York

1. My ancestors came from Castiglione Di Sicilia. However, there is a strong possibility that my original ancestors came from the adjacent town of Francavilla.
2. My father is Orazio LOMBARDO (DOB 24 Aug 1921). His father is Vincenzo LOMBARDO (DOB circa 1889). Vincenzo had a bother named Rosario (aka Ross, aka Saro DOB unknown) and a sister named Francesca (DOB unknown).
3. Vincenzo’s father (ie my great grandfather) is Lorenzo Lombardo (BOB unknown). He married Concetta SURNAME UNKNOWN. I understand that they used to live in Francavilla.
4. Ellis Island records indicate that in 1911 Vincenzo Lombardo (ie my grandfather) went to the USA to be with his brother Rosario Lombardo. He gave his USA address as 117 Madison Ave Albany, NY.
5. Rosario Lombardo was married to Angella (surname unknown). They had 4 children (Giuseppe, Salvatore, Signorita and an unknown male that died young). Giuseppe Lombardo served as a “Marashallo di Carabineri” in Catania Italy. His brother, Salvatore Lombardo appears to have moved to the USA in about 1955-60. Signorita went to live in Catania.
6. In about 1912, my grandfather, Vincenzo Lombardo came back to Castiglione. He married Grazia LaMaestra. In their marriage, they had 5 children (viz Orazio – my father, Filippo, Vincenzo, Lorenzo and Carmela). All of these people migrated to Sydney, Australia in the early 1960’s.
7. Carmela Lombardo married Antonio MARINO. They moved to Australia in about 1961.
8. In 1914 (ie shortly after he was married) Vincenzo Lombardo went back to the USA for about 12 months. The shipping manifest indicates that he went to stay with his brother-in-law, Gaetano SCAVERA at 119 Madison Ave Albany, New York. Gaetano, while married, appears to have made several trips to the US (eg in 1906 and 1909).
9. Between 1905 and 1920, the address 117-121 Madison Ave, Albany NY appears to have been used as the unofficial Italian Consulate. Many people unrelated to my family gave this address on their arrival card.
10. My father (ie Orazio LOMBARDO) married Maria Catena ZUMBO (DOB 1 Feb 1926). My mother’s siblings are Giuseppe (died in WW II in Catania), Carmela Zumbo and Vincenza Zumbo. Two of the sisters (ie Maria Catena Zumbo + Carmela Zumbo) married 2 brothers (ie Orazio Lombardo + Filippo Lombardo).
11. Vincenza Zumbo married Carmelo Frisina. They had 8 children (Isadora, Antonio, Rosario, Vincenzo, Maria Concetta, Rosa, Maria and Giuseppa).
12. My mother’s father is Rosario ZUMBO (BOB 1898). Rosario was a Carabinieri. Rosario’s siblings are Maria Catena Zumbo (ie my mother), Carmelo Zumbo, Grazia Zumbo and Rosa Zumbo.
13. Rosario’s brother (ie Carmelo Zumbo DOB unknown) went to the USA.
14. My mother’s mother is Concetta GIUFRE (DOB circa 1898). Concetta’s parents were Michael GIUFRE and Vincenza LoMONACO (DOB unknown). However, I know for certain that Michael went to the USA several times but I cannot find any record of him arriving in the USA.
15. Between (say) 1890 and 1920 about 95% of the families with the surname ZUMBO left Castiglione Di Sicilia. A few gave 117 Madison Albany, NY as their contact address.

Let me say to "Gente". I'm sure there will be people who will be able to help you and also some that you will be able to help with your generous offer.

Why not go to our 'About Us' thread and tell us a little about you as well?

I love it when people join and post straight away - it gives us the chance to welcome them and say 'Hello'... so thank you for giving us the possibility of doing that

Thank you Riccardo for replying to my post.

Gaetano Scavera and Mike Scavera could be the same person. However, I cannot confirm this until I am able to locate his date of birth. You are right. The good thing is that there are not a lot of people with the surname Scavera in Sicily.

A good tool for determining the frequency of a surname in Italy can be found at: gens.labo.net/en/cogno...=1960&k=FF

I hope to sort out his DOB soon. Charting the Italian side of his movements is proving to be easier than his American side. I have identified a 30 year old person named Gaetano Scavera from Castiglione Di Sicilia that arrived at Ellis Island on 18 April 1909. New York has changed a lot in 80 years. Theoretically, he and his offspring could have moved residence 6 to 8 times. Finding his latest address is difficult (but not impossible).

My biggest problem is that I live in Sydney, Australia. Accessing records from the County of Albany or the local libraries is difficult. I could be paying lots of fees for records that are useless to me. May be my best bet is to have a holiday in the USA. I have been to Disneyland but not to New York.

Finally, it is worth noting that the County of Albany, NY has digitised some of its financial records (for the period say 1980 to 1995). This includes mortgages and deeds. This provides very accurate and timely information for anyone doing similar searches. These are available free - on line (see access.albanycounty.co...rch.aspx).

Thank you for your interest in my ancestry.
