Hello, I'm interested in finding out about the history of my surname, Logozzo.

My great-grandfather Joseph Logozzo was born in Calabria in 1896 and moved to Brooklyn, New York in America on his own at 13. I'm not sure if it was before or after he arrived, but he dropped one of the zs in Logozzo, and our last name has been Logozo since 1909/1910 (I'm not sure why he did this).

A friend of mine was able to get the history and family crest of his last name (Albanese) from the internet. I'm having a lot of trouble finding information on my last name.

Any information on the Logozzo name or where I would find this information would be so helpful, thank you!

Lauren I would be careful on family crests found on the internet as most of them are fake. Family crest were issued to a person by nobility usually and then passed down to the first born (usually son). They were not shared by all family members or people with the same last name if I recall correctly so I would research this more if I were you.

Other than the crest, what other information do you have on Joseph? Have you placed him on a census or found his ship manifest?

I found this Giuseppe Logozzo's from towns in Calabria heading to the USA. He lists his mother as Giuditta and father Rocco in Brooklyn. He was 17 which is about the age most men left for the America's. Do you think it could be him?

First Name: Guiseppe
Last Name: Logozzo
Ethnicity: Italy, Italian South
Last Place of Residence: Gioiosa, Italy
Date of Arrival: Sep 09, 1913
Age at Arrival: 17y Gender: M Marital Status: S
Ship of Travel: Verona
Port of Departure: Naples
Manifest Line Number: 0017

Also found a ww1 draft registration card for a Giuseppe born 7 Feb 1896 who lists his birth place as Roccella. Wife is Mary.

I have seen records for Logozzos primarily in the comune of Gioiosa Ionica, RC and some of the surrounding towns. You can order and view microfilms at your closest Mormon Family History Library. Louis Loccisano is my cousin and he has done a lot of research for Gioiosa Ionica. He may be able to assist you further. You can email him at loulocc @ pacbell.net.
