My Grandfather's first wife was Rosa Bellante [1868-1895]......her Atto di Nascita lists her parents as "Icognito" so I'm assuming she was an orphan. I have seen in the past that naming conventions for orphans frequently used names like Proietto and Esposito to depict that the child was abandoned, etc.
My cousin (her Grandparents emigrated to Grenoble France where she was born) wants to find out more about her Great Grandmother and asked for my help.

The cognome "Bellante" does not appear in any other Corato records, past or present, as I researched all the microfilm for the town. There is actually a Comune of Bellante (TE) in Abbruzzo......any ideas as to how this surname was given? Could there have been a stranger in town....maybe a soldier from Bellante who was the Father??

The name and surname of abandoned children was a decision of the Civil State Officer. There were no rules. In some towns they assign a surname such as Proietti, Esposito, Ignoto to depict that the child was abandoned, in other towns the would assign names such as Diotallevi=God-rises-you, Laudadio=Praise-God, Diotisalvi=God-save-you etc, in other towns they would simply assign a surname not used in the town (and this would still identify the kid as abandoned). This could be the case of Rosa Bellante: she was the only one to have that surname in Corato.
