I spent the afternoon at the FHC and I was able to copy a whole year and a half of births to CD. The director of the Center didn't say anything although he looked a bit worried there when he realized I really planned on copying the whole film. I assured him it was being done with no thoughts of profit in mind. He seemed a bit more relieved at that point..besides, I told him I was related to half the town...personal research... Wink

I now have the extracts for Ardore births, 1831 and part of 1832. I can't wait to get the new server so I can put the extractions online. Not sure if I'll be able to do what James has done but I will try.

Fantastic!!! You copied every birth? I am so jealous, it takes me 5-10 minutes to do 3 digital images on our machine at my local FHC. Their hours are 7-9 so you can imagine how that does not help me so much, I have to make hardcopies and pay heaps.

How do you get that machine to work so well for you? How many pages are we talking?

I did over 200 scans from 1 pm to 2:30 pm (with a smoke break in between). It cost me $1.50 for the CD...thats it. I put the film in the reader and began scanning and scanning..then I submitted them all at once. I kept thinking of what you said and got kind of scared but nothing happened. I should check to make sure because at the end I added 32 more records and I pray I didn't overwrite anything.

I actually mentioned your website to the director of the FHC and told them all about your work. They seemed impressed. Wanted to know how far back a person could actually trace back using church records. I told them I would ask you..

James, guess you need to come back to Toronto and we can use my FHC. It would actually be cheaper for you then spending all that money for photocopies!

Tonight I only got 1 year of Pubblicaziones scanned and copied to a cd. There were 2 people in line for it before me so I didn't get on the scanner until 8:30 and they close at 9:30 - it took about 30 minutes to scan and copy 50 Pubblicazione documents with a few distractions in between (I was helping new people and ordered a new film). The other day I got 2 years of Pubbs scanned and copied to 2 different cds (1 for each year) in an hour and a half. I think your scanner needs major repairs Jim! The cds only cost 80 cents and come with covers! Isn't there another FHC near you Jim - one with better equipment? Even if you had to go much further in distance it seems to me you would save a lot of money!! Nuccia how did you copy the birth acts? 2 on a page or 1 at a time?

Cathy I scanned one page each time otherwise the records would be too far away. I think I can quickly resize them so it won't be too bad.

Not sure what to do witht hem yet but I'll figure it out.

Does your FHC scan them in huge tiiff files like mine? Each scan is between 3 and 6 megs. Before I can upload them to the internet I have to change the format to jpg and resize them to a smaller size and clean them up a bit. This takes much longer than the actual scanning process. That in one of the reasons I have so few up on my site right now. Organizing them on my computer is another issue... but now that I am doing every file year by year it should be better.

Jim, if you find an FHC near you with better equip., let me know. As I said, the one I use in CT only has a very old printer and no methods to burn onto CD.

Wow Nuccia, that is faster than my hardcopy machine! I am incredibly jealous. This is the procedure at my FHC for the digital copier:

1) Place roll on reel, hit advance

2) locate page 1 and hit the print button on the reader
3) go to attached pc and hit read (30 Seconds to a minute)
4) then hit save/print (about 1-2 minutes)
5) locate page 2 and hit the print button
6) go to attached pc and hit read (30 seconds to a minute)
7) then hit save/print (about 1-2 minutes)
6) you must now burn and or save those two images, if you try to scan a third the PC will reboot and you will lose the scans.

Like I said it takes 5 minutes for 2 scans.

So I give up and pay around $30. for 300 or so hardcopies, come home and scan the pages individually on my flatbed scanner.

ARGH!!!

I have to take my reel off the read only machine, then hope no one is on the 15 yr. old printer. Then I print it and then bring it to Staples to enlarge the image because the quality on the old printer is so bad. Sad

But, I don't want to complain too much because if it weren't for those microfilms, I would not be able to search for currently unknown relatives.

James I can't believe the scanner crashes like that. I'm having a field day with ours. Mind you, this is one of two Centers in Toronto and is fairly modern. The Center is beautiful and the equipment seems up to date, so I guess I'm lucky.

Right now on permanent loan I have the following films. Not sure if they will help at all but here they are..

1448852 Ardore Births 1831-1859
1801703 ITL Reggio Di Calabria Agnama BMD 1895
1800866 ITL Agnana-Stilo Births 1888
1800909 ITL Reggio Di Calabria Benestare-Stio B1889 (has some deaths on it too..check the family serch site for more info)
1518214 ITL Gearce Births 1842-1858
1802008 and 1802009 1903 and 1904 Births for Locri I think..I can't remember but I'll look them up and let you know what they are. Hopefully I can find records in one of them with your surnames. Because Lou goes to Cardio Rehab near the Center every Tues, I get out there once a week and go nuts for a couple of hours. I think next week I'll just go throught he fims and scan all the indexes instead for each film first so at least we can see who is on them. They include so many comune its hard to figure them all out.

OMG!!! Poor Jim! The thing that really sticks out in my mind is it appears your scanner equiptment is much newer than mine - and so much more complicated! Mine will soon be eligible for antique status! It is a huge clunky old machine with a hand crank for the microfilm and the computer it is attached to still has Windows 2000. Maybe I'll take a picture next time I go. It looks like this machine is from the 1960's. But it is fast and works well with some focusing of the lens. I just wish I could get a whole 8 hour day on it alone! Ah yes! Me, the microfilms and the scanner all alone! I could get so much done! Very Happy

Looks pretty good! I would go a little darker if you can next time, some of the names are difficult to make out. Just a suggestion Wink

Let me know if you plan on hosting the images like I have, I'll try and help you.

<---still incredibly jealous!! Neutral

YIKES! That image is HUGE! Great scan. Mine are much smaller - maybe I should go bigger when I link them? What do you think Nuccia , will you be hosting images? hehe
