Can someone make out the name of the last residence of my friend's grandfather, line 5? Surname just like the town, now Enna, but she said they shortened it. Did not know that and know her since kindergarten.

(manifest is attached, not embedded)

Also what does it say in the right column of the line above? Looks like "Dyde to bord" and the line is crossed out. The handwriting is different, almost like someone still learning. Does it mean that the little girl died en route?

What a terrible thing, to come all that way and lose your child before even getting to their new home.

I have seen many manifests - and many have lines through their names. Does that mean that they were deported? Fiorello LaGuardia helped many avoid coming all the way here then being sent back for illness when he was consul in Fiume, and then later at Ellis.

Came across some census records that were of orphanages, all girls on one page and boys on another. Some had same surnames, so perhaps siblings. Still bothered by all this, imagining losing parents, not speaking English, and put into an orphanage. I wonder what happened to these kids.

Dave

Hi Dave

I believe the last residence would be Mussomeli . When written in Italian the second s was written as a long s which looks like an f ..... so I think Mussomeli would be correct. Hopefully others will jump in here and give their opinion too.

As for the little girl I'm not quite sure if it says she died on the ship. Still looking at it.

Hi Dave,

When a name is crossed out it means the person never boarded the ship. Perhaps "dyed on bord" really means "did not board."

These manifests were filled out before the journey began because US customs required each vessel to give a listing of every passenger and
then the lists were double checked upon arrival

Hi Elizabeth and Mauro,

Well, Mussomeli seems relatively close to Castrogiovanni. I see that it is Mussumeli in Sicilian. I'll have to check more and report back to Charlotte to see if the name is in her family.

I do wonder why the family would leave their daughter behind - perhaps illness or too young for the voyage. In other manifests, I have seen some entries stamped 'deported' and cringed at the word. That's what I liked about La Guardia - from a biography by Bella Rodman: he boarded a ship with a doctor and announced that there would be no sailing until all passengers were examined by the doctor - at company expense. There were complaints, but he was backed up in Washington.

There certainly are a lot of names crossed off, Mauro. Seems like more than usual.

There are feelings for these people, having been separated from my daughter when she was the same age, and might have ended up in an orphanage if I had not been raised by relatives. Some dreams about all this.

Thinking of researching the children at the orphanage - how did they fare?

Thanks,

Dave

My uncle came from Sicily along with his father. They left behind my uncle's mother, younger brother and sister. They did not have the money for all of them to come at the same time. This is just one example of what I have heard from family members.
