So I spent a week in MA where my mother was born and found more information out about my family. My grandfather could not write in English so he had his brother do it. The long and short of it is my grandfather, a fisherman born in 1897, had two familys. The one in Vieste and the one here in the US. My mother was born in 1949.

As recommended by the forum I sent a letter off to Vieste to try and get a copy of his birth certificate. I believe that was in March 2012 and I have not heard anything back (I did use the free translator and the recommendations given on this board -- thank you very much!!)

I have the name of my mother's half siblings, but no way to trace them or to even know where to begin. One of them has passed away (in the early 1960s.) My mother's half sister, at least in 1985, knew nothing about her and that she lived in Canada at the time of my Great Uncle Carlo's letter. I assume he has passed now too, I do not know if he was a much younger brother or not as I can not find any information on my Italian family. I do know that the youngest brother, I believe, knew about my mother because she would send letters to her father at his address which was listed as "Salumeria" which I was told is like a deli. I dont know how to find her borther or sisters ages or if they are still alive either.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The Americanized version of my MMN is : Buo, but I now know that in Italy it is called: Bua.

Researching mother's maiden name: Bua

Maternal Grandfather: Vincenzo Bua
(Was called "James" in the US)
Born: 21 Aug 1897
Died: June 1985
Born & Died Vieste, Foggia, Puglia Italy

Not sure if this got through the first time??

Here is a list from Paginebianche (white pages) of the families listed under the Cognome BUA:

My suggestion is to write a basic letter (in Italian) to all the names listed and identify the family that you are trying to contact ---- provide enough info about your family so they can "connect the dots" if they are another branch of your family. I did this about 10 years ago to connect with my Uncle's family --- he had moved to the city of Foggia from Corato to raise his family. I provided my Dad's name, my Grandpaents, my Uncle and his sister. I received 3 responses from 1st cousins......not too much to lose, just some time and postage.

BTW, Vieste is a beautiful little town ---- we spent a day touring there with my cousin:

Good luck.

Researching: Corato, Provincia di Bari in Puglia e San Giorgio Albanese, Provincia di Cosenza in Calabria.

Hello, Very Happy
Have you looked at civil records on film at the Family History Center?
You can find one near you.
