HI, I've been trying to find the birth and death dates for my bisnonno, Ferdinando GRASSi, and his parents born in Naples between 1840 to 1846.

The only date I have for him, is the civil record of when he married Emilia Pacileo, 14 February 1870, at the parrocchia di San Matteo in Monticalvario-Napol.

I've looked on many web sites, including the Naples web sites for the church of St Matthew, but it does not seem to be listed. Perhaps it was closed, like those in the USA? or it was a family chapel in 1870?

To write for the church or civil records, if they are available, they would need a birth date. Anyone have ideas where to find this information?

Hello Very Happy
Maybe some help here if you haven't seen it.

I did some looking for Ferdinando and found a birth record in the commune of Avvocata, which is close to Naples in the Province of Naples.

This Ferdinando was born April 11, 1840 or the birth was recorded then.
His father was Don Raffaele, 38, and mother was Teresa Vial??

This link will take you to the front of the birth record.

Point your mouse over the record to read it. The next page is the back of the record.
There is a note written on the left and I think it was written in 1904. I am not sure what it means except the part where he marries Carmella Matone.

Maybe someone on this forum read the back and tell you exactly what is written. Maybe a clue.

As you know, Emilia Pacileo and two grown daughters, came to NY in 1904 and were going to son and brother, Raffaele. The manifest indicates Emilia had been to NY once before in 1900 and also suggests she is a widow.

I am guessing Ferdinando never came to the USA since you do not have his death date?

Maybe some help here. Very Happy
Paul

Shocked Thanks Paul,
I actually did find it on that site, but I can't be sure yet. I do have his Civil Marriage record, and would need to get the actual Church certificate to be sure it's the same person. The problem is, that church is no longer listed on any site in or near Napoli. Still, just in case, I saved both documents on my computer pages.

But I'm not clear what to make of Carmella Matone, if she is shown as his wife, then he is definitely not my bisnonno! (May be a cousin, as names run in families)?
My bisnonna was Emilia PACILEO, they were married in 1870. And yes, she came to the US of A, in 1904 with 2 of her (3) daughters. My nonna & 5 other brothers had already come here, the last brother in 1907. Emilia & Ferdinando's 2 other sons stayed in Italy.

You'd think our family would have given us more clues, but they didn't. The only story we have, according to the family is that he died at age 49, that would mean he died in 1889, in Italy. Their last child was born in 1887 so it's a possibility that it is him, except for that listing of Carmella Matone as his wife.

Thanks though, who knows where this will lead… It's funny, that for every single find, you are left with several more questions!

Paul, you've helped me tremendously! I just took a look at the link you gave. My find was just a list of names. More importantly, I never knew the Battesimo was on one page, and the Matrimonio on the next! You told me that! Molto Bene. The only thing I can't find on either page is a year, On the Matrimonio, looks to be 28 March, but no year, or at least I can't read one. I still can't figure out is the "con Carmela Matrone" thing, unless . . .

The marriage page has 3 names I recognize: Don Eugenio GRASSI, Don Rafaele GRASSI, & "Don Luigi e di Taranti." These 3 names are in some documents I have, ca. 1728 to 1845. One mentions a Ferdinando in 1817, "fileo di D Eugenio" & another has D Luigi in 1822. hmmm?

Too soon to tell, but looking at the document & seeing all 3 names on it makes me think there is something to this. But which Ferdinando, in 1817? or 1840s? Like I said, each find brings more questions, hopefully to solve soon. Now to get someone to translate these.
Grazie Mille, Paolo
