I am doing research on my son's fiancee's family for a wedding present. I finally found the town where her great grandfather was from and now need to know how to proceed.
His name was Rosario Raco, born January 1, 1890 in Portigliola. He immigrated to the United States in 1912. His father's name was listed on the ship's registry, but I can't read what it says.
I was wondering how I could find out who his parents were. He also married a girl named Teresa Taliano, at least that is the last name given to me by the family. I was told she was from Calabria also. On a census form it listed her immigration date as 1916, but those dates aren't always accurate, it seems.
Is there any way to find birth records or marriage records from Portigliola? I can't read Italian, and I am somewhat pressed for time.

SSDI for Rosario..

Social Security Death Index
about Rosario Raco
Name: Rosario Raco
SSN: 174-07-1130
Last Residence: 15106 Carnegie, Allegheny, Pennsylvania, United States of America
Born: 4 Jan 1890
Died: May 1975
State (Year) SSN issued: Pennsylvania (Before 1951)

You may want to consider ordering a copy of the Social Security application and see who he lists as his parents.

The only Teresa Taliano I could find was a 16 year old girl from Ardore who arrived in 1913 with her mother Caterina Morabito and a brother. Ardore is very close to Rosario's town.

You may want to try writing or emailing the Comune and requesting Rosario's Birth Act which will list his parents names. The address is:

Benvenuti nel Comune di Portigliola

Comune di: Portigliola, Via Roma tel. 0964 365002 - Fax 0964 365594
Provincia di: Reggio Calabria
Email: info @ comune.portigliola.rc.it

The letter must be written in Italian and you must make sure you ask for the Atto Integrale di Nascita which is a copy of the actual birth as it was registered. If you're lucky, you may even find out the grandparents names as well as other info from it.

Another ship Manifest for Giuseppe and this one says he is going to see his son Domenico and leaves behind his wife CATERINA so I *believe Rosario's parents were Giuseppe and Catarina/Caterina. Rosario's birth Act should confirm this.

First Name: Guiseppe
Last Name: Raco
Ethnicity: Italian, South
Last Place of Residence: Portigliola, Italy
Date of Arrival: Jul 08, 1913
Age at Arrival: 50y Gender: M Marital Status: M

Manifest Line Number: 0007

Nuccia,
Thank you so much for that information!!!! That was amazing. I tried to read the ship's manifiest but could not make out the name of Rosario's father nor the name or town of his brother-in-law.
I kind of thought that Dominico might be his brother, judging by his location and the rarity of the name, Raco, but wasn't sure.
Also, I will see if I can use some kind of online translation help to compose a letter to the address in Italy. Is there any kind of fee which they require to do this?

There are a couple of free online translators that can help you with writing a request to Italy.

I prefer this one:

www.angelfire.com/ok3/...tters.html

Now, you can try emailing the Comune as well but I'm not sure if they will answer - of course, you have nothing to lose. If you write to them, make sure you address the letter correctly or they may not get it.

Comune di Portigliola
Via Roma
Portigliola, Reggio Calabria
89040
ITALIA
Email: info @ comune.portigliola.rc.it

Nuccia,
I did attempt a letter to Portigliola, so I'll see if I hear anything.
I do have another question about something you mentioned to me regarding Teresa Taliano (above.) I looked at the ship's manifest, The Principe di Piemonte, and had major trouble reading it. I saw Teresa Taliano's name (line 18), but could not make out her mother's name. You said her last name was Morabito. I am under the assumption that most Italian women used their maiden name on official documents - correct? Her first name looked like -----Rosa. Then over on the line where it listed nearest relative in the town where they originated, it looked like it listed:
Parent - Catarina. I wasn't sure if Catarina was Teresa's mother's first name or her grandmother's name.
Then it listed that Teresa's mother was joining her husband who was _______ Taliano. I couldn't make out his first name. Then it looked like the address was given as some numbers and ______ Street. Why wasn't the town listed or was it New York City? Can you make any of that out?
It also seemed to indicate they were not immigrants, but aiens. What exactly does that mean? Had they been here before or just visiting?
I appreciate any help you can give me.
Becky

Angela Rosa Morabito traveling with daughter Teresa and son Giuseppe, leaving mother Caterina in Ardore is heading to Connecticut to see her husband Francesco Taliano. Heading for work now but will be back later.

I don't think that Teresa Taliano can be the right one judging by her age. I can't find her under her married name either, Teresa Raco. I have spent so much time on her with no results - frustrating.

I am trying to find info on so many names from Italy, most of them from southern Italy, it seems.

Here is another one that maybe you can explain what it means:
Ernest Ferretti, born1898. According to his naturalization papers, he was from Acquasanta Falciano Ascoli Piceno. I think that means Aquasanta Terme, as I found that as a town in Ascoli Piceno. (That one is actually central Italy, I guess.) Anyway, on his ship record, which was the Cretic, arriving from Naples to Boston on April 15, 1921, he is listed as Oreste Ferretti. He is going to Pittsburgh to meet his uncle Vincenzo Ferretti. Under his relative's name in his hometown, it reads like this:
Sante Ferretti Felciano Ascoli Piceno. Is Sante used as a first name?
I don't really know what Felciano or Falciano means. I can't find it listed as a town or area in Italy. Do you have any idea what it could mean?

Colle Falciano is a frazione (hamlet) located in the comune of Acquasanta Terme.

Thank you, Biff, for the info on Colle Falciano.
I actually received the Soc. Sec. info today in the mail re Teresa. It lists her as Teresa M Italino, place of birth given only as Italy. Her parents' names were Domenick and Frances, with no last names given. Her date of birth was 11/09/1883, but I don't know if that is accurate since in the 1930 census, her date of birth was 1888.
I can find no Teresa Italino on any ship record. She listed her year of immigration as 1917 on the 1930 census, but who knows? I also can find no record of any naturalization papers. Wouldn't she had to be naturalized to apply for SS?
I don't know if her name was Taliano, Italino, or Italiano at this point - very frustrating. I also was wondering if the "M" listed between her first and last names was the initial of her middle name - I assume it was.
