I am attempting to trace the family of Paul Sacchetti born 1884 in the southern part of Italy.
Paul immigrated to the United States either in 1902 or 1905 depending on which record you believe. His parents stayed in Italy. I found an immigration record that I believe belongs to Paul listed as Paolo Sacchetti.
His obituary lists his fathers name as Peter Sacchetti and mother as Rose Rodan. The obituary lists the place of birth for Paul as Criche, Reggio-Calabria, Italy.
Paul Sacchetti married after he came to the US. His wife also came to the US from Crichi, Italy in 1912. Her name was Theresa Marincola, she was born March 1898 to Anthony and Antonette Scarza Marincola. Theresa came to the states with her mother. I believe that Antonette returned to Italy sometime early in the 1920's. She was listed as Antonia Marincola in NY state census in 1920 and was staying with Paul and Theresa Sacchetti.
I would appreciate any correspondance on this family. Thank You

Welcome to the forum!

I believe that the correct name for Paul's place of birth is Simeri Crichi, here is a site, in English, where you can get some info about this city: http://en.comuni-italiani.it/079/133/

For reference, Teresa Marincola and mother's 1912 manifest, lines 11 and 12
Page 1
Page 2

I believe Teresa's mother's maiden name was Antonia Scalzo.
Their destination was Watertown, NY to join son/brother Nicola Marincola at 136 Factory Street. Nearest relative in Italy, nephew/cousin Angelino? Scalzo. Antonia is a widow.

Additional information on Teresa Marincola's mother Antonia Scalzo Marincola's death on 19 Jan 1950 from Watertown Daily Times, 31 January 1950.

She remarried Domenico Lillo in 1912 at the Church of Lady of the Sacred Heart and they both returned to Italy in 1920. Her son Nicola and daughter Teresa Marincola visited them for two months in the summer of 1949.

Biff, Thank you so much for this link www.fultonhistory.com/Fulton.html It has a wealth of information and has been so much fun to read. While there are many more Sacchetti families in NY State than I realized, my Sacchetti family were in the Watertown NY area only. The records in this archive enabled me to pinpoint dates and times and verify others. What a great find. I can't thank you enough. Gloria

Interesting, I have looked at that immigration record numerous times and never noticed that the destination was Croton. I will have to check it out. Thanks, Gloria

You're welcome, Gloria!

Newspapers are a great source of information and it's terrific that there are a number of free sites which have and continue to digitize the papers.

Just an educated guess on my part but Paolo's mother Rosa's surname in his obituary was probably Rodano. The Rodano surname currently is present in seven towns in the province of Catanzaro in Calabria.

Sellia Marina
Vallefiorita
Simeri Crichi
Catanzaro
Sersale
Soveria Simeri
Sellia

In case you haven't seen this.

In doing a search for current surnames in Simeri Crichi at the following two sites, I did not find any listings for the surname Sacchetti but did for Sacchetta.

italia.indettaglio.it/...gnomi.html
Next to Calabria, enter the surname and then hit the Ricerca button on the right
You can search by
1)exact name (Cognome esatto)
2)begins with (Inizia per)--you must enter at least the first four characters of the surname
or 3)contains (Contiene)

www.paginebianche.it/index.html
Enter the surname in the Cognome field
Enter the town name Simeri Crichi in the dove field
Then hit the red Cerca button

Yes, I too thought Rose's name might be Rosa Rodano. I found a whole bunch of Rodano's in that area, so I have been searching for it under that spelling as well as Rose Rodan. The only concrete thing I have is a newspaper clipping from her son Paul Sacchetti's obituary. (He went by Paul here in the states but his immigration record is Paolo Sacchetti )
My connection to this family is thru my stepfather so I don't have an actual bloodline to them. I wanted to give a special gift to my stepsister so I started researching her family history. I am hoping to have it ready (at least in part) to give to her for Christmas.

Hi again, Gloria.

I've located Paolo's WWI Draft Reg card and the family's 1920 and 1930 census records. If you do not have copies, would you like me to post links to the images?
