Luca.

By VERRI do you mean plural of VERRO= Boar, Boars?

Also, Cinghiale = Wild Boar? There are wild boars in Calabria and Basilicata.

But, "Custode de cinghiale, Custode de verri"? Possible?

Charlie, Sorry, I guess we must search more.

Non cinghiali, ma MAIALI (basilari nell'economia contadina di tutti i tempi!).
Ma potrebbe essere anche: "custode di Navi" (nei manoscritti scambiare una a per una e, oppura una v per una r non è difficile).
Senza originale non arriviamo da nessuna parte Crying or Very sad
I custodi dei cinghiali, comunque, ci sono: peccato che adesso non è stagione di caccia Mr. Green

Luca,

Cinghiale - Maiale.

I believe that this POST will be OT = Off Topic, but I can not ressist to cite:

Francesca Dodario's "Sua Maesta' il porco". A delightful book, extremely well documented, her work for a "Laurea in Lettere Moderne... presso l'Universita degli Studi della Calabria".
Cosenza, Periferia, 1a. ed.2003; 3a. ed. 2004.

Francesca says in her "Introduzione:.. Qui proponiamo una rivisitazione di quest'animale incompreso e caluniato da vivo, ma tanto apprezzato da morto."

Given to me in Rende, Cs., read many times over!

Luca,
I do not believe that in San Giorgio Albanese, Cs. they had "navi" since the region is quite mountainous . Will check if possible rivers , or lakes large enough to comport small "navi".

Luca,

Thank you for the correction, i.e. adding one "n" that I missed when typing. Some of us do not make a living as typists.

I thought the important here was to help Charlie. However, we all contribute what we can...

Luca,

Also, to make you happy I have added one more consonant, as making up for one missing... What is life without humor?

Ok you two..enough funning..lol. We are all having a serious problem trying to figure this out. I don't think it would be sailors or anything to do with the water either..if it was in Reggio maybe..but not in Cosenza.

I translate it to be custodian of black.. now to figure what that means. I have looked all over the internet and in all my books and there is nothing even close. Maybe this site might help?

Nuccia,
I have called friends in Cosenza-Rende, at Ucal, mystery. Even this morning I asked somebody else in Cs = nothing.

Look at the suggestion in It. from a professor at Ucal - "it may be from a local dialect, possibly one of the 2 arberesh dialects translated incorrectly into It."
I have checked many 1800 sources, back and forth the Crusca = nothing.

My first guess had been a little fruit from that region. Winters there are hard, with lots of snow. As in Canada, as we know, many plants are protected...taken care of.
Well, at least I do my best.
===
By the way, did you check that family connection I told you about? You are connected to all the Calabrian nobility! Lets start calling each other "Donna"!

Googled the phrase "Custode di Neri" and some hits mentioning it, in Italian:

Di terri e di mare

Someone will have to translate that part of the book, but this other about a family has a transcription from a page with Italian and English, though they say (sic) herder for Custode di Neri in what looks like a complaint for robbery. About 2/3rds down. Search for the phrase; it is just below an image of a tattered page.

DaveFerro,

I have read all the documents posted by you, including the original document in Italian, and its English translation.

Yes, " Custode de Neri" is an Herder, Herdersman, Shepherd, Guardian. Individual who tends, or drives herds of animals, generally sheep, or goats.
In this case I suppose either sheep, or goats with black fleece, used for wool yarn, etc.

David thank you so much for your posts, as it seems I was not far off. Your research confirmed it.

I believe we have now enough information for Charlie!

Charlie, David, Nuccia, Luca... and others,

Please, see my Post of July 17, 6:21 p.m. The documents found by David confirms it.

Finished!

Sophia kiss to all
