Hi -

I am searching for info about a few family surnames, esp. Finelli and Lepore from Pico. Origins and anything would be helpful.

also, Casale from Potenza and Mastrovito from Lecce.

Thanks in advance.

Hi amorese

I have some Potenza films on perm. loan at my FHC. Do you know if the town is Potenza in Potenza province or a differnt town? If the town happens to be on any of the films I'd be happy to look up Casale info for you.

Thanks for responding Billie.

I was always told that the town was Potenza. Hopefully this is correct.

Thanks again for any help you are able to provide.

Sorry it took so long to respond.

I am interested in particular about information on Nazzareno Finelli (my grand father) born 1888 in Pico. Father: Raffaele Pasquale Finelli and Mother: Giacinta Lepore. Although his brother sponsored his coming to the US, we know little about what happened to the family in Italy after that. I can actually trace them back to the 1700's more easily than after he left Italy around 1910. I'd also like more info about them before that.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Andrea,

I'm going to just start shooting you some records, many of which you probably will have seen. Maybe something new will jump out at you..

World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918
about Nazzareno Finelli
Name: Nazzareno Finelli
City: Worcester
County: Worcester
State: Massachusetts
Birthplace: Italy
Birth Date: 27 May 1888
Race: Caucasian (White)
Roll: 1674502
DraftBoard: 2

WW1 Draft Cards

He says he has already filed his first papers to apply for citizenship upon registration.

And his brother..

World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918
about Jeremiah Finelli
Name: Jeremiah Finelli
City: Worcester
County: Worcester
State: Massachusetts
Birth Date: 11 Sep 1878
Race: White
Roll: 1674506
DraftBoard: 5

He references his next of kin as Nazzareno, his brother who is in the US army overseas. Thats interesting.

Thanks.

Well, it looks like by the dates, Nazzareno would already be overseas by the time Jeremiah filled this out but as for the next of kin part....hard to say. Obviously their Dad was still alive in Italy and we know there were 2 sisters (names?) as well. Their mother died around 1890. Perhaps Jeremiah had his reasons. And that leads to the rest of the story:

There is some sketchy stuff because of a scandal around the fact that my grandfather had a wife and 2 kids in Italy before he divorced and married my grandmother in 1921. Everyone went "quiet" on the subject and anyone related to it as with all good old family scandals and thus the lack of info. I would love to be able to trace that first family and what happened to them and if I could find people from Pico that might have the same interests..... I know it's a long shot.

As I said, I'm also interested in the Finelli origins as the family also had a coat of arms that linked them to the famous sculptor by that name. Always wondered if it were so.

Unfortunately, most of the old folks are either gone or never took an interest in their ancestors.

Andrea,

I don't think its a long shot at all..I think it can be done. It may require looking through microfilms at the FHC for Pico or writing away to Italy but its definitely not impossible. The best thing to do though first, if you haven't already is make sure you have all your US research done. In the 1920 Census, he is already listing himself as single and living with the Casali's...He lists immigration as 1915 so you know

1920 United States Federal Census
about Nazzareno Finelli
Name: Nazzareno Finelli
Home in 1920: Worcester Ward 3, Worcester, Massachusetts
Age: 32 years
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1888
Birthplace: Italy
Relation to Head of House: Boarder
Father's Birth Place: Italy
Mother's Birth Place: Italy
Marital Status: Single
Race: White
Sex: Male
Year of Immigration: 1915
Able to read: Yes
Able to Write: Yes

Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members:
Name Age
Domenic Casali 51
Mary Casali 48
Elizabeth Casali 19
Rochitelle Casali 16
Mary Casali 15
Joseph Casali 13
Daniel Casali 10
Domenic Casali 9
Nazzareno Finelli 32
Nicholas Carali 53

lHave you found his ship manifest? If so, can you post it here? I'd be curious to see what he lists on it.

On the WW2 Draft Cards he lists the person who will always know his whereabouts as Elizabeth Nazzareno, 706 Franklin St in Mass.

So much mystery around this guy. I actually have found Jeremiah's name on a ship manifest (transcribed incorrectly as Gevemia) but not Nazzareno. I thought someone mentioned him coming through Boston not NY, although, again, no details.

I have not seen the WWII draft card record but my grandmother was Elizabeth Casale (yes, he boarded with her family for 5 years and married the oldest daughter...took everyone a couple of years to adjust but they did and Liz and Nazz were devoted to each other for 59 years). So the Elizabeth Nazzareno reference is some kind of admin error.

He never did serve in WWII.

Thanks again for all this.

Looks like two different sets of handwriting on the draft card. Elizabeth Nazzareno is definitely Elizabeth Finelli so the error just was never caught.

Where are the Boston ship manifests located? Are they on line?

They are online and I have been looking but so far no luck. I will try again today. Oh, these records are all from ancestry.com which is a paid for site.

I will also have a try here..
