My Wifes father was stationed in or around Trieste during 1942/43.He was in the Italian Army. The only information we have is that his surname appears to be Ruggio and it is thought he was born in Calabria or Sicily. Can you please advise the best way of searching for my wife's family,- Photo of her father is attached.

Hi Sandy,
Nice to have you here with us on "Gente di Mare". I'm sure that some of our genealogists will be offering you help and advice on the best way to search. You've come to the right place.

Why not tell us a little about yourself and your search so far? Just go up to the "About us" forum in the General Discussion section. If you have done some (even just a tiny bit) of research it will help if you share it here so others don't duplicate your work!

According to the Gens map the name is not a common one. It is most common in Puglia (the heel of the boot) but there are some Ruggios in Sicily and Calabria. See the Gens map here: gens.labo.net/it/cogno...enera.html
Do you have any other information you can share? Approximate date of birth, did he come to U.S. or Canada? Is he alive? Anything you may know can help.
Thanks.

Do you have a first name for your wife's father? How did you arrive at the conclusion that his surmane could be Ruggio? Was he married to your mother in law? Did they meet in Italy and if they were married, did they marry in Italy? Had he ever been to America that you know of?

The more "little" little clues you can provide us with, the better we can help you.

Looking forward to your reply. Always love a good challenge! Very Happy
