I have seen Death Notices posted in Italy (usually a small poster, many time with a photo of the deceased). Does anyone know if they post obituaries in the newspapers, or has anyone found an OBIT website like there is here???

Maybe some of the Italian members could comment.

I remember once Carole telling me that they did not post obits in newspapers n Italy but only placed the posters that you mention in the neighbourhood. I don't know of any site that lists obits for Italian deaths but I'll keep an eye out for one. I had started extracting Italian deaths a while back but found it too challenging at the time with everything else that I have going on. Maybe it's time to re visit the idea.

Thanks for the feedback Nuccia.

I did find one website after searching on Google; but it was from a funeral home that had a webpage where you could leave messages for the family of the deceased (like we have in the US; not sure if you have them in Canada). I was hoping that maybe there was an OBIT.COM for Italy.

I have extracted the "Atti di Morti" for both my Paternal and Maternal families. These actually helped me to locate the oldest family data from people who died in the early 1800s ---- I was able to estimate their year of birth from the death records.

By "extract" records what exactly do you mean?

Extract needed data from original Italian documents -- Atto di Morte (Death), Atto di Nascita (Birth) and Atto di Matrimonio (Marriage) ---- names, dates, etc. dependent upon each document. I used Microfilmed Records from the Family History Library (Church of Latter Day Saints) for my family's ancestral towns in Southern Italy

You need to order the microfilm from Salt Lake City (the local library will help you) .... last time I rented it cost about $6.00 for about 4 weeks or so. They are also in the process of putting records online, but this will take a long time as there are a lot of films.

familysearch.org/eng/L...t_fhlc.asp

This website will provide the list of films that are available for your towns of interest ---- usually films are available from 1809 --- 1910 but that varies by the individual Comune in Italy. Of course the documents are in Italian and some are handwritten; there are aids online to provide a translation of each document type (most are pre-printed forms with handwritten entries) so you know where to look and what info is presented.

Had a folder with links to obituaries but cannot find it - however another link to a search for Italian obits is still there and some go to rootsweb (one of which needs volunteers for looking up obits):

The search link is for to Ask Jeeves, so it was a while ago:

Italy Obit Search Ask Jeeves

Obits Index - Italy (rootsweb)

rootsweb Obituary Lookup Volunteers Italy

Hi Charlie,

One of the search results was for a newspaper but the title was Italy, Texas so I wasn't sure if it was a town in Texas - there is an Italy, New York, village and township. But there are obit notices there for people in Italy.
Just checked:::yep, Italy, Texas is south of Dallas.

Did find that obits folder in bookmarks (under Genealogy) and there are a few more there, but some have you going around in circles:

Obituary Central

Interment Records Online

Obits Archive

Then there is FindAGrave but I don't remember if they are international.

Just thinking about the undertaker here in Auburn that you asked about years ago and will e-mail/call the local historians to find out the info for you.

Take care, all

Dave
