I'm searching for more info on my paternal side. I've gotten as far as my Great Grandfather Francesco Valenti. He had at least 2 brothers that I know of Carmelo & Paul. My Great Grandmothers name was Vitina Nobile. I have no other information on her, other than her birth & death dates.

Anyway, I'm trying to find out where to find (hopefully) in English (I know, it's not going to happen) records for things like birth, marriage & death from Bivona. I'm already on Ancestry & have been searching like crazy. I'm also on a few others as well, only to find most things are either in Italian or kind of illegible.

My question is, is there a site just for Bivona that anyone knows of, or maybe can just point me in the right direction. Any & all help would be greatly appreciated...PLEASE!!!!

Thank you, Gina Very Happy

Welcome Gigi,

Unfortunately not very many towns and provinces in Italy have digitized their records. Ancestry has just recently begun their efforts to do so and now have a small number of town records online. The way most of us have found the data they are researching is either by writing to the Comune in Italy (in Italian) to request the documents you are seeking and you do need to provide a reasonable estimate of when they were born (keep in mind that most records are still in the original hand-written ledgers) or you can do you own searching via microfilm at the Family History Center library:

www.familysearch.org/locations

you can also write to the Town Hall (Municipio) at the address in this link:

www.comune-italia.it/c...#municipio

The letter should be in Italian and there are some folks on this list who will help you translate.

Good luck in your efforts

Hi Charlie,
I'm definitely going to try this one as well. I am actually registered on both sites you've recommended.. Problem is, I'm just LAZY!!!! LOL

I did try searching on the Family Search Center site, and came up empty Sad

I guess I'll just have to keep looking until I get a hit. I have thought about trying LDS, but I've read so many negative things because they were told they couldn't get the records anymore. Also wasn't sure how to go about it, do I just walk into the office, or do I have to make an appointment?? Too many un-answered thoughts. Oh we'll, what to do??

Thanks, Gina

Best thing to do is locate the FHC nearest to your home....also look online at their catalog to see what films are available for Bivona......it is a pretty small town, so there won't be too many films.....then go to the FHC and order the appropriate film (Births covering the time period). The FHC offers pamphlets for sale explaining how each countries records are written and what you need to extract; there are also aids posted online as well.

The original docs are of course in Italian, but with a limited vocabulary you should be able to quickly get the hang of it, and you should be able to extract the data you want about your ancestors. Writing to the town to request the data is not always successful.....the luck of the draw, because small communities have very limited resources and don't always want to take the required time to search their archives. It works sometimes, but also there is no reply on many occasions.

While there is some data online, it is very limited (Cosenza ia an exception) and Ancestry is in the early stages of posting the docs online.
