I am trying to find some information regarding my grandfather. I am told that he migrated from Calabria sometime around 1885. His name was Samuel Caristo and he settled in Pennsylvania. When he registered in the U.S. they misspelled the name to Carsto.
Any information on existing family members would be appreciated.

Hello Very Happy Welcome to the forum.

If your grandfather was born abt 1878, married to Edna in 1900, was a miner in Shamokin, PA, and died in 1947,
there is information about him and his family on Ancestry.com and other places online.

Is this your family?

Paul

Are you looking for Samuels birth place and possible family in Italy or are you looking for family in the USA???

I think his birth was in Isca sullo Ionio, Catanzaro, but can't be for sure.
These records from that comune are on line at FamilySearch.org.

Here is the 1878 index of births, Saverio Secondo Caristo...#14
familysearch.org/pal:/...,392355902

Father is Bruno and I need help with the mother's name.

And the birth record (#29, lower left) Recorded on May 24, 1878
familysearch.org/pal:/...,392355902

The info on Ancestry suggest he was born May 23 1878.

If you have the marriage record for your grandfather, maybe it will show his parents names.

Paul

I'm looking for information on my grandfather's side of my family. His name was Rocco Vincenzo Caristo (1913-1986), from Grotteria, Calabria. His parents' names were Gennaro and Assunta, also from Grotteria. Gennaro was born in 1853 and Assunta in 1872. They emigrated to the US in 1920 via New York then settled in Boston.

I have done digging on Ancestry.com and Geni.com but come up with nothing past Gennaro and Assunta.

Any tips on how I could find more information? I would love to go further back on this side of the family.

Any input appreciated!

Mothers name is Maria Teresa Lacroce.
I cannot help you, because Catanzaro is beyond my area, but I can tell ou that the name Caristo is from Agharistò or Acharistò which is a Greek name. I have found that surname in Bova in the Grecanicanl area of Calabria untill 1645 and it disappears in later on. Maybe when they moved out of the Grecanican area it was Italianized to Caristo.
The gh and ch in Agharistò and Acharistò is pronounced more or less like the J from Juan in Spanish

You have two options - one would be to write a letter to the Comune of Grotteria requesting the marriage act for Gennaro and Assunta which will give you the parents names, ages and tell you if they are living at the time or you can rent the microfilms from Family Search website to your nearest Family History Center (you would need to know when they married) and then look for the Pubblicazioni (Marriage Banns) and Marriage Act yourself.

Have you ever worked with microfilm before?
