My grandfather worked at our local zinc mine in Wisconsin for many years but I believe he switched jobs and began working for the rail road (maybe in the 1940's). My uncle also worked for the rail road.

Is there anyway for me to look up records for the two of them or are there free sites that might give me information?

Thanks
Elizabeth

Hi Elizabeth Very Happy !

I'm not aware of any free sites for look up. Here's a link to the US Railroad Retirement Board's website with info on genealogical queries. Wish I could offer more.

Any idea what railroad they may have worked for?

Un abbraccio dalla Florida,
Biff

Hi Biff I'm so glad you saw this thread!!! I was hoping for your expertise.

I don't know what the name of the railroad was, what I can tell you is the depot was in Mineral Point Wisconsin (where I was born and raised) and I use to walk from my house to the depot to meet my uncle everyday after he finished work so I could carry his lunch pail home for him. There was only one track at the depot and it ran from Mineral Point to Calamine and from there I'm not sure where it went.

I believe the railroad actually started there around 1870 or 1880. I don't know much more than that.

Thank you so much Biff!!! kiss I put in a request already this morning. I'm going through every link on the railroad site. Very Happy

This is my Mineral Point. The picture of the depot is the same depot I would meet my uncle every night. It's about a quarter to half mile from where I lived and my uncle lived just a few houses from us.

I have such great memories of all of this. On special occassions my uncle would tell my brother and I to be at the crossroad (in between our houses and the depot). On those days all the kids from our neighborhood would be there and my uncle and the crew he was on would stop their flat car (the type with the teetertotter handle you had to pump). He would have my brother and I get on and we got to pump the handle the rest of the way to the depot. The other kids would run to the depot and stand there and cheer as we pulled in!!! All the men on the flat car would be laughing and my brother and I really thought we were something, getting to do what the other kids couldn't. We were like a couple of peacocks!! Mr. Green

Thanks again Biff and I'll let you know what happens. kiss

Elizabeth,

It sounds like your uncle worked on the section gang (a work crew assigned to maintain and repair a specific section of track) and they used a hand car to check the track.

Here's a link to
The Milwaukee Road Historical Society

Biff you're right!!! Now that you say section gang that is exactly what my uncle did! And this photo brings back memories. The handcar was a bit bigger but the exact same set up. Make me want to go back about 40 years and do it all over again!

I can't thank you enough for all your help Biff.

My pleasure lending a hand.

Let me know if there's anything else I can help with.

A presto,
Biff
