Well, quite sure it was a shepherd. Well done, Aether.
However the expression "custode di Neri" in that book refers to a document of the year 1744 and, evidently, was a local dialect. It should be interesting having the original for a complete analysis.

I don't think they were necessarily black.
I guess it was a way to call an herd (black or white indifferently; unless they were racists Mr. Green )

"custode" means 'keeper' and/or 'attendant'
"neri" was a way to indicate a type of pigs and they are black (still living in calabria).
these pigs live usually free, and they are halfway wild, but still pigs. they are tame pigs and completely different from boars.

you can find the expression 'custode di neri' in 'catasti onciari', ancient censuses 1742-1754 under the Bourboun (borbonic) kingdom in south italy

below you can find the census of Zumpano: Catasto Onciario di Zumpano

here other censuses:
Archicalabria

ps. i ate a pork chop of this. it's delicious!!!!! Surprised

Grazie Maurizio,

Do you live in Calabria? My "nonni materna" were born in San Giorgio Albanese, Provincia di Cosenza.

Hi Maurizio,

I have been to San Giorgio Albanese for two quick visits. Both of my Maternal Grandparents were born there (Rosario Minisci and Isabella Dramis). I still have relatives living there. It is a beautiful area.

I have been trying to learn where they originated from, as I have been told they are both Greek and Albanian. My Grandmother's name, Dramis sounds Greek ----- they were both listed as Greek on my Mother's Birh Certificate (she was born in the USA) and my Mom's first cousin was the Superiore at the Abbazzia Greca at Grottaferratta. I have been told that there were Minisci in Calabria since 1300 (from Papas Pietro Minisci of San Cosmo Albanese) and another cousin who lives in Parigi said that the Dramis family was one of the 3 founding families in San Giorgio Albanese from about 1600.

I am hampered by my poor Italian to do proper research, although I am sure there are very few written records available to learn more.

Hello nuccia, never been in italy? rende and san fli are very close. malito is 30 min from here. i have relatives in toronto: ritacca (do you know someone?)
hello charlie
I don't know the dramis family but name sounds like albanian (from 1400 to today) greek (or byzantine) dominion in south italy was from 400 to 900.
it's hard to find documents about catasti onciari and expensive too. pepole from neaples can reach the library, but i live far from there.
i know many people that are studying catasti onciari. i hope they can do works similar to mine.
merry christmas to everyone!!!

Maurizio,
Hi! My name is Cathy and I am planning a trip to visit Montalto Uffugo where my grandfather was born. My cousin's grandfather was born in Rende. I do not think Montalto has any hotels. I am thinking about finding a hotel in Rende or Paola. Do you have any recommendations?

paola is far from montalto, instead rende is very close, expecially quattromiglia quarter. just 4 miles from cosenza. i don't know hotels in montalto, but maybe there are bed and breakfast. if you want i can ask. please let me know if you prefer B&B or hotel.

ps. yuor website is very nice, i like it!!! Smile
