Would anyone happen to know how I could locate which town in Italy my ancestors came from? Or perhaps if there are other Redhook Italian Manuses out there? Vincenzio Manus and his family arrived in NY from Italy in 1875/1876 and settled in Redhook, Brooklyn. Vincenzio and his sons were all longshoremen, including his son Michael. Michael married a Mary Smith (1883-1913) (who was of UK descent - her mother's name was Adele Askin of UK, father James Smith). They had children Mary, Ralph, John and Adeline.

Michael later married a Maria Esposito of Italy after Mary passed. Michael died in 1936 in Brooklyn.

Also - I am not sure what our real last name is. Michael's WWI draft card shows that his last name is "Manice" - Card Serial #5688 - but on my granddad's (Ralph) birth certificate of 1903, the last name is MANUS and that is the name we still go by.

I would love to know anything about this set of long-shoring Manuses from Redhook! I am a direct descendant. Thanks!

I want to show you this 1877 arrival manifest....
I think it's the right one for Michael, his brother Frank and their mother....

New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957
about Michele Minosi Esposito
Name: Michele Minosi Esposito
Arrival Date: 16 May 1877
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1875
Age: 2
Gender: Male
Port of Departure: Mediterranean Ports
Destination: United States of America
Place of Origin: Italy
Ethnicity/Race/Nationality: Italian
Ship Name: Castalia
Search Ship Database: Search the Castalia in the 'Passenger Ships and Images' database
Port of Arrival: New York
Line: 22
Microfilm Serial: M237
Microfilm Roll: M237_408
List Number: 396
Port Arrival State: New York
Port Arrival Country: United States

It seems the two child were travelling with their mother Serafina Esposito.... do you know if Serafina was her first name? On 1880 census she's Abbey...

Hi Laura - thank you for taking the time to find this information for me! I knew that the 1880 census record likely referred to the family; now with certainty I am sure of the ship record. We know nothing about our Italian side - only that they settled in Red Hook.

Do you know how I can find where in Italy the family may have come from? I have been working on this for over a year now and feel that I keep running up against walls. Any thoughts as to where I should look next?
Again, thanks for your help!

Hi Marycmus,

where you able to find Vincenzo, Michele, Frank and Serafina's death certificates? Maybe they could have the birth place listed... Confused
Laura

Perhaps some U.S. member can help better, I don't know very well how it goes with U.S. records.... Maybe the Naturalzations too could be helpful....

However I can't determine which was the real last name.... Sad

Just a thought - I would suggest that the family name may be Minosi as the two children are shown with that (the fathers name?). The mother carried, as would be normal, her birth name.

Could it be that the clerk, who recorded their arrival, added a ditto next to the childrens names as he did not know that Italian women retained their own surnames after marriage. Serafina probably gave the childrens surname (correctly) as Minosi.

ciao Carole!! Very Happy

Qui piove Crying or Very sad
Buona giornata!
