My great uncle John, son of Giovanni and Sebastiani Gargano, came to the USA and was reportedly living in the Chicago area. A newspaper article I have posted on www.italiangenealogy.com states that he was a coal miner. My Aunt once told me he had 5 boys and he owned or worked in a macaroni family in Chicago. I have run into a brick wall trying to find any evidence of him in Chicago I would love to be able to find some living relatives from him.

Anyone who can help me?

Hello!!!

I was not able to locate Giovanni's birth record on the microfilm, at least not yet.

I know nothing about his family other than his siblings and parents of course.

There is no Montana in our family so I think this may not be the same people as my family. I am not sure.

I am not able to this this info to my family!!! Sad

I was told that John had 4 or 5 boys. I also posted the newspaper article on IG which is all I know about him so far.

???

Hi Elizabeth!

The only nearest record I found about Labarbera in Springfield IL is those about Vito Labarba 1930 census I posted in the other post.....
But we know that Vito (born in 1910) and Giovanni (born in 1908) La Barbera (from the manifest I posted in the other post) were born in Springfield IL......
But I don't know why I can't find their censuses...... Sad

Laura your 1910 census in Sangamon is correct. Springfield is in Sangamon county.

This links has John (Giovanni's) son's cemetary information. At least I believe this to be his son. Laura see what you think.
www.interment.net/data...x_lale.htm

Edit to add comment

The age of this person (born 1908) matches the age of the little boy in your 1910 census. I believe these pieces all fit together.

Yes Elizabeth!
I think this is John La Barbera's family.... he was a coal miner in 1910 census!
And probably in the April 23, 1919 trip his first names was mispelled from John/Giovanni to Antonino (I wrote John that it was strange find two brother with the same name .... Very Happy )
Going to his brother Antonio in Sprinfield and leaving his sister Giuseppa in Bagheria....

Edit: from the 1919 arrival manifest Antonino/John is widower, this matches with
Did print the one for Gaetano's brother John, who died in Colorado in June 1963 - and have the 2 obits for his sons John Jr & Thomas P - - their obits indicate that they had different mothers... - Mary Bottilio/Buttita seemed to have been the 2nd wife of John A Sr..

All this dates matches....
So this Antonio (probably John) was born approximately in 1882, was married with a Caterina/Chaterine and in 1910 had two sons....
I'm searching now for 1920/1930 censuses but I'm pretty sure that Vito's 1930 census I posted before is correct.... (age matches)

From the IG Forum posted by John:

Hi John -

Yesterday - Tues - at the Public Library, I jotted citations for all the indexed obits for surname LaBarbara (none with spelling of LaBarbera in the index-card files)...

John "LaBarbara", b. abt 1883, died at 5am Sunday, June 23, 1963, at the home of his son Tom in Denver CO.

Survived by 3 other sons: Anthony of Las Vegas NV, Thomas and John of Springfield; dau Mrs. Bessie McFadden of Springfield; 12 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren

They are:

Bessie M. McFadden - - (don't have death date yet - the index card in the LaBarbara section was simply a maiden-name cross-referenced to married name; she was the daughter of John, above)

John Jr - d. Sept 3, 1974, age 66
Mary - d. Jan 4, 1953, age 60 (nee Buttita/Bottilio), wife of John - Sr., I would guess)
Nina - d. May 30, 1958, age 28
Thomas P - d. Feb 24, 1973, age 51
Vito - d. Dec 13, 1940, age 31

- and here is the IL Death Index listing for Vito - he died in the TB sanitarium, just a few miles east of Springfield:
LABARBA VETO M/W UNK 0000314 1940-12-13 SANGAMON ST. JOHN SANITARIUM - -

OK!!!! Elizabeth!
It's John La Barbera's Family!

.... I think we have more in the census:

1910 United States Federal Census
about Tony Bacher
Name: Tony Bacher by the manifest is Tony Barber
Age in 1910: 24 (29 on the manifest)
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1886 (1881)
Birthplace: Italy
Relation to Head of House: Boarder
Father's Birth Place: Italy
Mother's Birth Place: Italy
Home in 1910: Springfield Ward 2, Sangamon, Illinois
Marital Status: Single
Race: White
Gender: Male
Year of Immigration: 1903
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
John L Barber 28
Catherine Barber 22
John V Barber 2
Vito Barber 0
Charles Bash 26
Tony Bacher 24 Tony Barber 29 , boarder

So his birth year could be 1881, this matches with the dates about Antonio La Barbera... I'm pretty sure he was Antonio son of John/Giovanni living with him....

Laura

John had said earlier he didn't think this is correct, maybe the uncles name on the manifest is not Montana. The name Filippo is there for sure but maybe I'm not reading Montana right. Take a look at the name and see what you think it might be.

I agree with your findings for the census data and Tony is a boarder, I think this is the same family on the manifest and the census.

Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Thank you!!! I have a question...

I have a person who will be visitng the Bagheria Civil office for me late next week to search the records for me in person.

Is there anything I can ask him to look for that will help us confirm what you are suggesting?

Hi John,

Did you want your friend in Bagheria to look for records strictly for Giovanni (John) La Barbera or just family records in general?

If you can give a brief summary of the information (documents) you already have that would be great. And a brief summary of what you would like, or still need to find for documents in Italy and documents from the US.

Then we can get you pointed in the right direction.

Smile
