Hope someone can help me with a record I just found on Ancestry for my husbands Great Grandfather, Karl Kabbel. Found an index for a declaration of intention and petition, US District & Circuit Courts for Western District of PA, date June 30, 1903. Karl aka Carl Kabbel/Kebbel was born 3/7/1879, we have him born in Koenigsburg Germany. This index is showing Russia. Karl had lived in Brooklyn, NY, Hackensack and New Milford, NJ. He also lived in PA but the town and county is unknown to us. Some of his children were born in PA but we have no BC's. I have been checking the PA Archive sites and NARA, do not know where to go for a copy of these documents. Only have copies of his WWI and II registration cards and some ship manifests showing his brothers coming to the USA to his home in Brooklyn, NY. His father's name was also Karl, brothers are Albert Kebbel, Wilholm Kebbel and possible sister Emma Kebbel. Anyone familiar with PA archives?

Here is the index you found on Ancestry. My first post had the actual petition.

I don't see a town on the index or the actual petition. - sorry. Both list his home country as Russia though. Did you find a ship manifest for him?

Do you know if Doris is a relation?
Name: Doris Kabbel
Age: 27
Birth Date: abt 1910
Issue Date: 23 Feb 1937
State: New York
Locality, Court: Eastern District of New York, District Court
Title: Index to Naturalization Petitions of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York, 1865-1957
Description: Joris, Robert to Kaouris, Helen
Series: M1164
I did a quick search on Ancestry - it appears there are 2 different men. Carl Kabbel born in Germany and Karl Kabbel born in Russia. Do you know which one is correct?

No, not for Karl Kabbel, also spelled Kebbel, Kabble or Keabbel. Found ship manifests for his brothers Albert Kebbel, Wilholm Kebbel, Auguste Kebbel and a possible sister Emma Kebbel.

I cannot find Karl either but the petition lists his date of landing (on US soil) so this is a great clue. April 26, 1895 is the date he entered the U.S. so Steve Morse's site can help here...I'll look over there now.

Son: Karl Kabbel born March 1879 East Prussia
Wife: Frieda Harnisch birth date unknown

Using Steve Morse's gold form was no help. Crying or Very sad Sorry. I was hoping to find him there. It is possible that this is a different Karl (from Russia) or perhaps he lived in a town that was near the border. I'll keep looking.

No, this Petition is for our great grandfather Karl Kabbel, as his date of birth is right and the town in PA is the same town where our grandfather Hugo Kabbel was born. There are two Karl Kabbels. As Karl Jr was born in Prussia and his brother Albert Kebbel was born in Russia, one record may be for the father Karl and one for the son Karl, just not sure who would have come from German and who is from Russia. Need to find the records and check the ages. I do believe that these records are of our relatives. Thank you for assisting me, you have been a great help. kiss

Great! I'm glad I could help. I'm sorry I could not find his ship manifest. Perhaps his death record lists his place of birth. Do you know what state he died in?

Hi Cathy, still looking for is death records and burial. Some of his children died and are buried in NJ and FL, but our grandfather Hugo, after living in NJ for many years moved back to PA. He died and was buried in Fayetteville PA, so I am going to direct my search in PA.

Kathy: Would you please check Footnote to see if they have a copy of the Declaration of Intention or any other documents for Karl Kabbel. It appears that although Karl and his brother Albert were German, they both seem to have resided in and arrived from Russia. Thanks for all your help, Carol
