November 11, 2008: Ancestry.ca and FamilySearch Announce Agreement to Digitize and Index Existing Canadian Censuses

[The following is from a press release dated 10 November 2008.]

Ancestry.ca announced a joint initiative with FamilySearch International to improve online access to a comprehensive collection of Canadian censuses. As part of the agreement, FamilySearch will digitize and index Canadian census records that Ancestry.ca has acquired. These digitized and indexed records will then be made available to Ancestry.ca members on the company's Web site, and the indexes will be available for free to the public at FamilySearch.org. The images will be free to qualified FamilySearch members and all FamilySearch family history centers.

FamilySearch will deliver images and indexes to Ancestry.ca for censuses from 1861, 1871, 1881, and 1916, to launch online in 2009. In return, Ancestry.ca will provide indexes to FamilySearch for the 1891 and 1901 censuses.

[Please note: Qualified FamilySearch members include indexers who submit 900 names in 90 days and receive 90 days of free image access. The validation system that will enable FamilySearch to authenticate qualified FamilySearch members will be implemented in 2009.]

They just added the 1916 canadian census to the current indexing list. I was surprised, since I dont recall seeing it on their future list (although, I dont have that big list memorized..lol)

Even though, many of the projects, since I started indexing in august, are no longer on our list to choose from (so I assume they are done), this is the only new project that I see there.

And sheesh..I am still up to my eyeballs in the trento baptisims. I had no idea, that there would be so much of this. I wish I could see how much has been done, already. I have been sticking to it. I was breaking it up by doing some US records..but, for about a week..have been pretty much doing the baptisms..with just an occasional US record thrown in.

This is so cool. You know when we did our census this year we had to tick off a part if we wanted our names to appear in the records when they become public. We were given a choice which means that in the future, due to privacy laws, many people who ticked no or nothing will not appear. This will making researching a lot more difficult in the future (not for our generation but most certainly for my great grandchildren.) I, of course checked the make public box.

I was talking to my cousin about geneology and she said..one day..people will be looking for us. And I was thinking..yeah..but there wont be anything to find. We have no more census taking in the us. I am sure they are counting us..but not door to door or in mailings. They even stopped the dog census in my town. Imagine? Lmao..when I moved here (30 years ago), they went door to door counting dogs..lmao

There might be..but they arent giving us anything to fill out. They might be taking it from incometax or social security. I have never, in my 44 years of marriage, have ever seen any kind of census.

In the USA we no longer need census to find out about each other

ancestry.com/ shows marriages of people from as recent as 20 years ago at the least and doing a background check on someone is very revealing some times
