Hi this is Camilla. Can anyone help me? I just found out my grandfather arrived in 1903 and then returned to Italy to bring his family here in 1906. I want to locate the ship and manifest to prove it was him since Calogero Sgro is such a popular name in Naso, Messina, Sicily. Please help. Mi ayuda. Grazie Camilla

Camilla,

Here's a possible 1906 manifest. See line 10 Calogero Sgro with wife on line 22 Carmela Conforto. Calogero previously in US 1903-1905 per manifest. Other Sgro's and Conforto's on manifest.

Do you think this is correct?

Biff

Ciao Biff. Mille grazie. I thank you for responding. I know about the 1906 arrival but here is my question. On my grandfather's naturalization papers he lists that he arrived here in 1903. There is a ship and manifest for 1903 with two Calogero Sgros (every one in Naso is a Calogero) What I want to find out is where can I search for ships that returned our Italian relatives when they returned to bring their families here. Here is another part of the puzzle. On the birth certificate of their first child born in the USA in November 1906 (poor grandma was pregnant while in steerage) it lists how many previous children do you have. It lists 3 and the one born in 1906 was number 4. I obtained the records of births in Italy and found two births after 1901 (the year they were married) but I can't find another child. If he was in United States in 1903 and went back and returned in 1906 that could be why I can't find another child (he wasn't home to produce one). The question is: Is there anywhere a list of ships and manifests that travelled easterly back to Italy?

Hi Camilla,

Not sure if I am understanding your question correctly but here goes anyway. If you are looking for an outbound record of your Calogero then there is no known database I know of that provides this information. I did find the 1910 Census record though..

1910 United States Federal Census
about Calogero Sgro
Name: Calogero Sgro
[Calogero Agro]
Age in 1910: 32
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1878
Birthplace: Italy
Relation to Head of House: Head
Father's Birth Place: Italy
Mother's Birth Place: Italy
Spouse's Name: Carmelo
Home in 1910: Manhattan Ward 15, New York, New York
Marital Status: Married
Race: White
Gender: Male
Year of Immigration: 1903
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members:
Name Age
Calogero Sgro 32
Carmelo Sgro 21
Elvira Sgro 2
Rosario Sgro 5/12

One of the questions on the manifest is how man children born and how many are living. Carmela had 5 children but only two were living by 1910 and they had been married nine years. Carmela may have had a child in Italy that did not survive (the first child). As for the other children - if you have their birth records then you may want to get their death records as well.

Additional info in case you haven't seen it..

U.S. World War II Draft Registration Cards, 1942
about Cologero Sgro
Name: Cologero Sgro
Birth Date: 5 Dec 1879
Birth Place:
Residence: New York
Race: White
Roll: WW2_2368667

Hope this helps a bit.
