Hi Guys,

I have been searching for a while, but have had no luck in finding a record of naturalization for my great great grandfather Giovanni Savoca.

I believe that there should be one for him, due to the facts that:

1. On his Death Certificate, it lists him as being a citizen of the United States.

2. From markings on the ship manifest from when he came to America. (I would link the manifest but I have never been able to figure out how Embarassed Embarassed ).

Giovanni came to America with his son (my great grandpa) Vincenzo, on June 10, 1913 on the SS. S. Anna. He was 43.

I was wondering, is there any way to find a naturalization record that isn't online? I figure there might be, but I am not sure where to even start.

I used this website to better understand the markings:
www.jewishgen.org/Info...Manifests/
The markings are in the occupation column.

Thanks for all the help in advance! Very Happy !

Mike

Mike,
Did you look on Footnote? I found a bunch of Savoca's in NY. What did they call Giovanni here? There were FBI files on Joseph Savoca! Cool

You can order a search through the government: www.uscis.gov/portal/s...18190aRCRD

It costs $ though.

I don't know if this will help. You can do research in person, etc, according to this:

www.archives.gov/genea...alization/

What is Online here?

On this web site you can find more details on naturalization records and the process. Also, you can do a search to see what naturalization microfilm is available from us and at which facility nationwide.

To search this catalog online:

From the main Microfilm Catalog page, click Advanced Search (next to the Search button)
In the righthand column, under Subject Terms, type in Naturalization
Hit "Search"
Larger Version Declaration of Intention, Number 27081, for Enrico Fermi, 12/02/1939
Once you find the microfilm that you think will be helpful, you can then come research in person, hire an independent researcher, or purchase it.

We do not have naturalization records available online (with the exception of a few examples in ARC).

Thanks everyone for the help. I have looked at Footnote and Ancestry, and neither have who I am looking for. Giovanni translates to John, and I really doubt he would have an FBI file (though that might be very cool)!

I would spend some money on this stuff, I would like to see what the record holds. Plus, I really want to see his signature lol. I just wish these things had a picture! I am going to play around with the links you guys posted and see where it takes me!

Hi Mike,

You may have already found this site. It gives some good information about Naturalization before and after 1906. Sounds like it would be worth finding the document, if he was Naturalized, as everything was supposed to be verified.

Hi Mike,

I was able to obtain my Dad's naturalization papers from the local Court House, assuming that you know where he was living at the time.

Lilbees, thanks for the link. I don't know why I never did that before! Thanks again lol!

Charlie, that could be something to look into. In 1931, Giovanni was living in Queens, NY, the dates listed on the ship manifest are 1/27/31 and recheck 10/19/1938. I guess he would have done it in Queens, so that is something to work on. Thanks a lot guys!

Hi Mike, have you checked Ancestry? There are a lot of Savoca's listed. Some with Naturalization papers, passports, etc. Thought it was interesting that there are papers shown for a Vincenzo Savoca and some for a Giovanni "John" Savoca.

Don't know if it would be any help for you but certainly worthwhile.

Do you have the census information for this family?

Hi Lilbees,
Yes, I have looked into the records on Ancestry, and have the manifests, census, and naturalization papers for Vincenzo. I think the records for a John Savoca's Naturalization papers were from Ohio...I could be wrong. If they were from Ohio, that excludes my Giovanni. I guess in the case of his Naturalization papers, I have to either do some leg work, or wait for Ancestry or Footnote to do it for me....which I don't want to do!

Thanks again for all the help! You're the best! Smile
