Can someone help me with the attached record? I believe this is my great-grandfather, but I don't know what all the various columns mean...

Giacinto Aloise, born 10 Oct 1856, living in Cassano. Parents were:
Francesco Antonio and Antonia Pascale.

I can't read the writing for the rest but Abile means skillful. Last word is vedova meaning widow. The column is for the decision regarding his ability for military service. It doesn't mean he served.

Thank you Jack.....could that mean that at the time of this document his mother was a widow? I don't see anything that really tells me when this document was created, guess I will have to order a copy to get a better view.

I think men were registered when they turned 18. (Key word: I think).

Maybe a better Italian speaker can help with the rest, but...

"...unico figlio...di madre tuttora vedova"

So yes...his mother was a widow and he was the only son. Probably taken into consideration for the registration.

If a man was the only on son (and he was) and the sustainer of the family (which he would have been since his father was dead) they usually didn't have to do military service. They were exempted.

The document should have been created in 1874...
