My sister is planning to visit Montebello Ionico in September; it is the birthplace of our grandfather, Demetrio Foti. He was born 8 December 1880 and left Italy to work on the Panama Canal. He married Beatrice Ponce in Panama on 19 February 1913. They emigrated to the USA in 1923. I know everything about the family in the US, but almost nothing about those in Italy.

Demetrio’s parents were Vicente, or Vincenzo, Foti and Vittoria Iria. He had two brothers and two sisters who survived him after his death in 1943; the known names of his siblings are Eleanora, Vittoria, and Joseph.

I have been unable to locate his birth certificate in the records of the Family History Library, and would like to know if it would be easy for my sister to locate a copy either in Montebello Ionico or at the State Archives. We would like to confirm his parents’ names. I don’t think there is enough time to write and get a reply before she leaves unless the turnaround is fast.

We would also like to be able to find our living cousins. Does anyone have suggestions? I am not finding vital records or many genealogies of Foti families to help me. We have photos of Demetrio, his sister Vittoria, and one brother. We also have a photo of two small children identified as Libero Massotti and Amolia Gattola. There seem to be many people named Foti in Montebello Ionico.

All help will be greatly appreciated.

With the August holidays coming up it will be difficult to get any records since everything is on limited hours or closed all together. You can try using the Italian White Pages (Pagine Bianche) to look up living relatives

In september the Archivio dello Stato in Reggio Calabria is opened every day from 8.00 except sundays. If your ancestors are from Montebello it will be a piece of cake to find them untill 1809. Before 1809 there are the churchregisters which are not complete but do go back untill 1600 (marriageregisters). You will find them in the Archivio Diocesano, next to the cathedral in Reggio.
If you will get to know living relatives just go to Montebello in the evening when everybody is on the piazza and ask the people. Montebello is not a metropole and everybody knows each other. Condition is you speak some Italian, because nobody speaks English. If you do you will find a bunch of very curious and willing people to help you.
The Archivio dello Stato is situated near Via Lia. Just take the exit Via Lia from the autostrada, go down for about 400 meters where you see a bar at the corner, take a turn right there and you will see a big yellow building. There it is.
