I have never seen one - but Riccardo may know. Riccardo gave me the address of the Cemetary offices for my grandfather's town. On a sad note (for me anyway). My town removed all the old graves to make space for new ones. All my ancestors are now in a mass grave. I hope your town did not do that.
Do you have a link to the Australian one? I would love to have a look.

Cathy,

I think that is a fairly common practice but it is not always consistent --- I think it is done for both space and also due lack of funding (perpetual care) to maintain the crypt or grave. My cousin's husband told me that in the City of Bari you are rotated into the mass burial vault in 8 years (I think you still get a little box) due to space limitations.

In my Dad's hometown of Corato, my Uncle who died in 1932 still has his crypt, but my Grandfather (1941) and my Grandmother (1931) are in the Ossuary (mass burial vault). In San Giorgio Albanese my Great Grandfather (1936) still has his original burial vault. Same was true for my other Uncle (1957) in the city of Foggia.

What is really neat are the photos on the graves which was a wonderful experience for me as I didn't know what everyone looked like as there were not too many photos available.

Maybe Riccardo can expand upon this as I am not the expert, and as I said it seems to be very inconsistent in my personal situation.

Here are two links that may help throw some light on the burial rites still used in many places here in Italy.

I forgot to mention something Riccardo told me once. In Italy it is against the law to take pictures at a cemetary without special permission. So if you are looking for a website with photos you will only find pictures taken by tourists who did not know the law. Are you looking for a particular town? I did find this website years ago. It has a few pictures from a cemetary in Maida in Catanzaro Province.
Maida Cemetary Pictures
We have some crypts like that at our "family" cemetary. It is primarily an Italian-American cemetary, so they must have brought their customs with them. I have a page about it on my old website (I have not decided if I want it on my new website yet).
Mount Carmel Cemetary
Also a great site to find graves is the website FIND A GRAVE But I think that site only has United States records.

Thankyou guys.I thought the pictures of mount carmel are amazing.I was actually hoping you could put your family name in and area they lived and see if anything came up.The site i was talking about in Australia is www.ozgenonline.com I found 3 of my italian born family members. You put in the name and it gives there date of death ,burial date and grave number. It was confusing when i found all of them buried in the same grave. You need to know what state and i just clicked all cemetries.Unfortunatly it doesn't give their date of birth. Smile
