Cathy,

Have you checked Lungro? I have some notes in another house, will check next time I go there. In Rende I would check with a group doing a lot of research in Cosenza . I wish I could stay there some 6 months. Fabulous grad. program combining religion, language , traditions and music!

Will let you what I may find on surnames.

Hope you don't mind I decided to bring this over to a new thread as not to "hijack" the other posters thread. I have not checked anything in Lungro. My cousins grandfather was from Rende - a very nice man with great character. My cousin went there a few years ago and has shared his pictures of many towns in Cosenza, Catanzaro, Vibo Valentia and Sicily. I am amazed by the beauty of the region. Have you ever heard of a local historian named Romano Napolitano who currently resides in Paola?

Cathy,

Check <http://www.Jemi.it> it is linked to The Eparchy of Lungro. It is possible to join the forum, has a great deal of information. I requires a user profile, very professional.

Also check the Grottaferrata Monastery, Rome. Library and archives : superb collection. Must present credentials to do research there.

Also, recently the Eparchy inaugurated a Seminary in Cosenza for the training of priests. I believe they will have good sources available.I plan to visit. I will pass on other information as I come by.

Hi Cathy,

I belong to JEMI, but it is mostly posted in Italian (although there is an English tab) ----- my Mom's 1st cousin was the Mother Superior at the Abbazzia Greca at Grottaferratta and I have been there a number of times to visit (unfortunately she passed away two years ago). It is a really neat place as it is built on Roman ruins, it is basically a fortress where a few Popes hid out and has St. Nilo which is an ancient Church.

I would think that Italian is a must for any research to be done there too.

Charlie,

I am glad you completed the information, so other members can also enjoy the web site. I am sure Cathy will be able, at G., to meet members fluent in English.
In my family I have both traditions R.C. and Greek Orthodox, and recently have spent a few months in Calabria and Basilicata visiting some byzantine churches, and monasteries, and plan to return soon to continue my research.
--------
Must have been a great joy for you to visit G. while your relative was there. Be joyful that she now began her spiritual life in the peace of God!
