I am desperately looking to find out where my father's family comes from. I wrote this board about a year ago, but thought I would try again, just in case...

We only recently discovered from granddad's birth certificate that his family hailed from Italy.

The only info I have:

May 16, 1877 - Francesco and Michele Minosi arrive in Castle Garden with their mother, Serafina Espisito. According to a census record, she owned a grocery store in Red Hook in 1900s...

They settle in Red Hook, Brooklyn where the family men work as longshoremen. Throughout the years they reside on Coffey Street, Conover St, and 117 Van Brunt Street.

Michele changes his name to "Micheal Manus" at some point; Marries a "Mary Smith," daughter of Adele Askin and James Smith.

Michael and Mary have several children together - Mary (circa 1901), Ralph (1903)... and others who die young

Mary Smith Manus dies in 1913, last place of residence 85 Coffey St. Buried at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Michael remarries to a Maria Gabino on June 5, 1915 at Borough Hall, Brooklyn. They have children together. He marries with the surname "Minosi." They live at 117 Van Brunt St. Maria had been living on 13 President Street.

Michael died Dec. 19, 1936. Resided at 289 Sackett Street, Brooklyn. buried in St. John's Cemetery

We are guessing they attended church at RC Visitation of the Blessed Virgin in Red Hook.

I would be grateful for any leads or suggestions you may have. We have had no luck searching naturalization records. The ultimate goal is to find out where in Italy the family may be from. Many thanks.

Hi,
by looking at the Italian white pages, the surname Minosi is found in the Apuglia region and mainly in the towns of Maglie and Uggiano La Chiesa (both towns are in the province of Lecce). The surname Esposito is spread all over Southern Italy.

I did a search to try to find his marriage to Mary Smith. The only option I found was this. Haines could easily be a transcription error for "Maines". It's a stretch, but I couldn't find another close marriage record.

Surname: Haines
Given Name: Michael
Month of Marriage: May
Day of Marriage: 27
Year of Marriage: 1899
County: Kings
Certificate Number: 2848

Surname:Smith
Given Name: Mary
Month of Marriage: May
Day of Marriage: 27
Year of Marriage: 1899
County: Kings
Certificate Number: 2848

I would recommend ordering the marriage certificate because Brooklyn marriages are very good about including information, including birth location and parents' names. Do you have the Maria Gambino marriage certificate?

Before making the jump across the pond, you need to track down the exact town he was from, otherwise it's nearly impossible to find records. Have you tried his obituary, Serafina's death record, or tracking the brother's info?

Thanks so much for your help, Jack! I am ordering the Haines marriage certificate tonight.

I do have the Maria Gambino marriage certificate - it does not list where in Italy she or Michael hail from.

Does the marriage certificate or death certificate give his father's name?

Hi Jack - you were right on about the marriage certificate. "Haines" was spelled "Maines."

Michael and Mary were married by the alderman Francis P. Ramsey, residence 402 Union Street.

"Vincent Maines" is listed as the father of Michael Maines (Manus/Minosi) and Mary "Marolw"(??) is listed as the mother. I can't make out Mary's last name on the certificate. But Michael's mother is listed as "Mary Serafina" on other documents I have. Vincent is also listed as the father on Michael Manus' death certificate, and on the birth certificate for Ralph, as well as the 1880 census.

The bride's name is Mary Smith, and her parents are listed on the marriage certificate - "James Smith & Adeline Askin." This matches what is on my grandfather's (Ralph Manus) birth certificate as well as Mary Smith's death certificate.

I just wish I could figure out where in Italy they came from.

Thanks for your help!

I don't know if it's just a coincidence... but I have a Francesco and Sarafina Manus in my bloodline. I saw your other post on ItalianGenealogy.com and responded to it. You are welcome to reply.
