All my life I thought my great grandfather's last name was Marscellas. I finally got a list of births from a Texas catholic church and found my grandmother and two of her brothers with the last name Marsalesi. In searching surnames in Sicily, the closest I come is Marsalisi, which is indeed the name one of my great uncles used, so maybe the church took it down wrong. So . . . . does anyone have any information on this name?

I can't find any instances of it (Marsalisi or Marsalesi) in the genreal meanings of names. Though I'm sure others might be more skilled than me with a search...

But it is quite possible that it might indicate an historic base in, or around, the French city of Marseille. It uswed to be known as Massalia and today has a population of over 1.5m people..

Names ending in-esi or -isi are very common in Sicily and although there are exceptions it does suggest a Sicilian origin. Ending is -isi is more common than -esi. Usually, by dropping the suffix you can find the origin family name or geographical name.

If I had to guess, the origin comes from the Sicilian town of Marsala (where Marsala wine comes from). This doesn't mean they were from Marsala, rather the ancient origin of the surname could be based there. The name Marsalisi is very common in the Palermo region.

The rules I've mentioned aren't really rules, rather trends and can't be taken as evidence! Good luck!

That does sound quite possible though... Marsala would fit the bill with Marsalesi wouldn't it?

Good thinking that!

Thank you all so much for your input. I will research further on the Marsala basis. Upon doing a surname search, Marsalisi came up in many areas in Palermo, where I am quite certain they were from. Thanks again for the info.
