I'm not familiar with how immigrants got to Canada? What is the Canadian equivalent to Ellis Island?

There are several Canadian ports that they could have come through..Halifax's Pier 21, Quebec but usually, before the 1960's I was under the impression the boats usually passed through the American ports first (an assumption on my part though so please don't quote me on this). Could they have been stow a ways?
