Hello all,
Newbie here so I hope I am asking in the right forum.
Here goes, I am looking for away to find current "alive" family members in Calabria. My GGF name was Filippo Alfano and he was born 01/29/1875 in Cosenza and married my GGM Luisa Gallo in Zumpano - 1899.
They had 5 kids before they left Italy and moved to the USofA.
I will be traveling to Calabria this fall for 3 weeks and was hoping to connect to the family.
Any ideas other than spending over a grand for a family tracker?

Speak with elderly relatives who may shed some light on the ancestral towns or remember relatives that stayed behind. Here are some websites that should help you get started:

Find where surname/cognome was prevalent:
gens.labo.net/en/cognomi/

If you know the ancestral town, here is the White Pages:
1254.virgilio.it/

There may be some additional data here:
www.familysearch.org/E...search.asp

There may be some info on the Ellis island website which lists an ancestor and where they lived in Italy:
www.jewishgen.org/data...sgold.html

Alfano is a fairly common name in Cosenza but you can look for Filippo's birth record here . It is the official archives in Cosenza Province. You will have to register but it is free. Once you find the parents you should be able to locate other family also.

Charlie: Thanks for the sites I will check these out.
Cathy, thanks for the info. I tried opening the website you wrote down however it comes up as:
HTTP Status 404 - /ascs_web/index.faces]
type Status report
message /ascs_web/index.faces]
description The requested resource (/ascs_web/index.faces]) is not available.
Apache Tomcat/5.5.20
Not sure what this means.

Can you post it here? Maybe someone else can read it. If you send me your info I can have a look to see what I can find but since I am at work now and taking a road trip this weekend (without my laptop), I cannot promise an answer before Sunday night or Monday night. I am from Chicago too!! Cook County has great records all available online.

Cathy actually what I found was his enlistment record. I has his dad's & mother's names plus it looks like siblings. However the script is to small and when I zoom in it becomes blurry.
What email addy can I send it to for you to see it?

The military record (lista di leva) probably does not have siblings names. I have my Grandfather's (who was from Montalto Uffugo in Cosenza) and it does list his parent's names and the fact they were deceased but no siblings. Those lista di levas on the archive are tiny - the other documents are a little bigger but they only seem to be up for a few towns so far. The information you need however, is on the archive. Email me the image at cathy. napolitan @ gmail .com (no spaces) and I will have a look for you and post it here tomorrow night. I am hopeful we can find siblings for your grandparents if we try hard enough. Did your grandfather and grandmother have any siblings that came to the US?

I received the document and posted it HERE The print is too small for my old eyes. I have posted it here hoping someone can read it or make it bigger without blurring it. All I can make out is his father's name is Pietro, his mother is Maria (cannot make out the surname) and they both appear to be living at the time this document was written.

Two other ideas: visit facebook to see if there is a surname group for the surname you are researching and search facebook for a group from your ancestral town. For example, there is a mostly Italian group for Celenza Valfortore and then I also started one for American descendants on facebook called Celenza Valfortore paesani of the greater Waterbury area.

I have made a lot of connections that way.
