I am trying to find my Italian ancestors. The only information I have is my great granddads marriage certificate, on this he is named as Eduardo Ruggea but this may be ruggerio due to spelling.
From what I can gather he came over to England around 1906 to 1907 and was born 1886/1887.
Can anyone help

Hi Silsol and welcome!
The surname Ruggea doesn't exist in Italy. For Ruggerio I found only one person with that surname on the Italian White Pages. While there are many Ruggero and Ruggiero. Why don't you post the marriage certificate so that we can see it? Or tell us his wife surname, sometimes the two surnames help to locate the town of origin.

Hi, if this marriage record is abt your ancestor:
img828.imageshack.us/i...uardox.jpg

the surname is wrote RUGGHA, that is the italian RUGGIA...
if my idea abt surname spelling is right, the second problem is to find the birthplace....
maybe the birthplace is mentioned in 1911 UK census...
all the best,

Hia

thanks for the reply's my ancestor got married in England - cheshire, this is why i think it is a spelling mistake - Married a lady from Bolton surname Tierney.
They set up an ice cream business with another couple from ital The Podesta's(Relatives) in Ashton under lyne - this shows on the 1911 census, here they changed their name to Rudger and had three children.
Their children then changed their names to Rogers.

I found a ship's manifest abt Jacob Podesta coming from Ashton under lyne

the italian birth town is very misspelled, however he joining at brother in law Luigi Queirolo; for both, the birth area is Liguria region .. I believe that is the same region where your ancestor came from...

Thanks suanj,

I'm hoping that the Podesta's are related in some way or they arrived from Italy together. Looks like a huge task ahead for me.

Thanks again

Have tried to find out if the Podestras had anything to do with the family but have hit a blank and our oldest member of the family does not rember their grandad telling them of them only that they had an ice cream business. I have attached their marriage certificate for you to look at but unfortunated does not give anything away.

1911 census should give you the town of birth.

Maybe he didn't pay to see the original. They had to state birthplace in the UK 1911 census.

Hi,
I found the birthplace of Giacomo Podestà( aka Jacob); you remember that on ship's manifest of arrival in USA the italian birthplace was very mispelled "Podigia"... this town not exist in Italy; well I searched and
by US records, WWI and WWII draft registration cards:

World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918
Draft, Enlistment and Service

View Image
NAME: Giachomo Podesta
BIRTH: 5 Feb 1885
RESIDENCE: Tuolumne, California
OTHER: Tuolumne County

no italian birthplace ...

but on WWII( 1942):
NAME: Jiacomo Podesto
BIRTH: 5 Feb 1885 - Pagge, Italy
RESIDENCE: San Joaquin, California

Also Pagge not exist, but the correct spelling is Paggi , a hamlet of Carasco( Genova province Liguria region, IT); in Carasco are Raggio surname... the birth in Carasco civil records show that:
On 5 feb 1886( no 1885) was born Giacomo Podestà, son of Giuseppe and of … Maria Raffi(or Raffo no much readable); in Carasco also are Queirolo ( right spelling) and Raggio surnames;
Giacomo Podestà birth act:
img156.imageshack.us/i...birth.jpg/
Vittoria Podestà nee Queirolo was born in Mezzanego ( Genova province)
arrival of Vittoria Podestà nee Queirolo:
Pag 1 www.ellisisland.org/EI...;line=0003

Pag 2 www.ellisisland.org/EI...;line=0003

the Carasco and Mezzanego town are no far

maps.google.it/maps?hl...CBgQ8gEwAA

Your Eduardo was born around 1886/7??
Regards,
suanj
