I was previously stuck on the origins of my Great-Great-Grandfather Luigi Bianco. He moved around a lot, at times living in Spadafora (ME), Novara di Sicilia(ME) and Scilla (RC). I last had him in Scilla in 1875. I never knew a thing about him other than he was "fu Diego" (son of deceased Diego) his birthplace or mother's name was always a mystery.

Thanks to Ann Tantangelo, who obtained a marriage certificate from 1894 for his son Paolino (my gr-gr grandfather) i learned that Luigi was dead in 1894 and had last lived in the City of Reggio (RC). Yesterday I found an index entry to his actual death record....

Luigi Bianco 1889 Index to Morti Reggio (RC)

From this index I now know his mother's name (Antonia SOFIA)!!

I don't believe Luigi was from The City of Reggio originally but his actual death record (this is only the index) SHOULD list his birthplace, and if his parents were living or where they were from.

I am so exited about the new surname SOFIA also, has anyone seen it before??

Luigi was born about 1832 and died in Reggio (RC) in 1889 (atto#711 from the index) his wife was Grazia Siniscalchi
His father was Diego Bianco and mother Antonia Sofia

Thanks!

Hi Jim,

My wife's great grandmother was Marianna Sofia, wife of Vincenzo Meli. Their children (Francesco, Salvatore and Luigi (my wife's maternal grandfather) were born in Bronte. Not sure where Marianna was born.

OOPS!!! Sorry.

It's in Catania in Sicily, very close to Mount Etna. In doing a quick listing of Steve Morse One Step, it appears that Sofia is a surname indigenous to Sicily.

I have an Agata Sofia in my line, married to Domenico Mazzeo. I think these are from my Sicilian line too.

WOW!!! That's awesome, I do hope they were from Sicily, which is the family tradition. All of Luigi's known children were born in Sicily (Novara and Spadafora, both in Provincia di Messina)

party party party party party party

I feel like today is my birthday, after months of waiting the actual death act for my great-great-great grandfather arrived. I had the index entry for him in March, with parents names and the atto#. Now I have the death act. This was the furthest back I had on my Bianco paternal line. All I knew about this guy was that he was born about 1832 and was married to Grazia Siniscalchi sometime around 1863. From this record I now know he was born in Messina, Sicily! It's a huge city, but now at least I can try and find my paternal Bianco line backward. Here is the image:

Luigi Bianco Morti Sep 13, 1889 Reggio (RC)

I don't even know where to look from here! The microfilms for Messina (LDS) are sooo plentiful. Yikes!! Only 2 years per film!!
