Hi,
I'm hoping someone can help steer me in the right direction on finding information on my Great Grandfather Michele Pietro Angelo Papandrea ( Michael Papandrea as he was know in Australia) He was born in 1875 in Reggio Calabria ( maybe Cinquefrondi area at a guess) I think his father was called Louis and don't know about his mother. He had a lot of siblings apparently and we think 1 sisiter was called Francesca. They were very poor and i don't know if a brother in law took care of him for awhile.
He came to South Australia on the ship Jura, Naples around 1899 where he jumped ship and hid out for a few years. He had 6 children and their names may be a connection to his brother's and sisiter's we are hoping. His children were called Camalla Clemimtina, Louigi Thomas, Raffaele Angelo, Carmella Francisco, Johanna Marie and Michael Vincent. All have passed away. Apparently 3 nephews came out to Australia and ended up in Sydney but i don't know anything about that. I would love to get my hands on his birth certificate and know exacly where he came from in Italy.
Heres hoping someone out there will no something.
Thankyou,Tracey

Hi Tracey..

I may be guessing here but since Michele named his first son Luigi after his father, I am assuming that his mother's name was Camalla (or Camilla Clemintina) and his maternal grandparents Raffaele and Carmella. On ancestry it does show a Luigi who was born about 1858 heading for New York and on the Ellis Island site I found two Papandrea's coming from Cinquefrondi to the USA. One, Michele was born 1877 and the other, born about 1881.

First Name: Michele
Last Name: Papandro
Ethnicity: Italy South
Last Place of Residence: Cinquefrondi, Italy
Date of Arrival: Mar 27, 1911
Age at Arrival: 34y Gender: M Marital Status: M
Ship of Travel: Duca Degli Abruzzi
Port of Departure: Naples
Manifest Line Number: 0010

First Name: Pasquale
Last Name: Papandrea
Ethnicity: Italy, Italian South
Last Place of Residence: Cenifuefrondi, Italy
Date of Arrival: Jul 05, 1910
Age at Arrival: 29y Gender: M Marital Status: M
Ship of Travel: Moltke
Port of Departure: Naples
Manifest Line Number: 0017

There is a Facebook for the Papandrea's - have you seen it? You may want to check that out. Also, I did find Michele's Naturalization records on the Australian Archive site. It doesn't say much other than what you have already mentioned. Have you seen that?

Thankyou for getting back to me. I did see the Ellis Island site but the years don't match for my Great Grandfather as he was already in South Australia in 1899. I have put something on the facebook site as well but have had no luck. It seems i have come to the end of the road in tracing him back to Italy which is sad. I hadn't thought that his children's names might have been his parents and grandparents names so that has given me a bit of hope. I did find his nationalization papers and that was where i found the little bit of information i have on him.
It's so frustrating that i can't get any further. Do you know if there would be any death records from Calabria Reggio area that i might be able to check online for? I was hoping to maybe find his parents names in a cemetery somewhere in the area. Who knows they might not have come from the Cinquefrondi area, that was just what an Aunt thought someone mentioned years ago.
I was wanting to one day go to Italy and see the area that my family originated from so finger's crossed i will find that bit of history that i need.
Thankyou for you time.
Tracey

Hi Tracey

Perhaps, and of course you would need to really pursue this, the persons on the Ellis Island site were family - I was thinking along the lines of cousins or brothers -

Another option is to go through the ellis island records one by one and look for clues that may pertain to Michele's family...someone might list one of the parents. Since there were so few Papandreas in Cinquefronti you may just want to write to the Comune there and ask them to see if his birth was recorded there using the information you have so far. The search has not ended..it's just beginning. It took several years to trace back my father's line 4 generations but it CAN be done. You just have to use all the resources available.
