Hello,

I have almost no idea how things work in Europe and so I have absolutely no idea where to contact wherever I need to contact and if you tell me where to contact without any contact info I'd have no Idea how to contact the place or what to do for that matter. Would the place speak any English?

I am looking for my family in the Reggio Calabria region

the only person of that part of my family that I know of is a woman named Gianina Esposito

Hi alanmercieca and welcome to "Gente"...

Don't worry about what you 'don't' know... There's plenty of people here who will be able to help and guide you through your new adventure. Yes doing research for the first time in Europe can be daunting, but rest assured you will learn all about the how's, what's and where's here on "Gente".

But to be able to begin to help you think our researchers will need a bit more information about the relative/family you want to find.

So we have
Gianina Esposito
born in Reggio Calabria...
Do you know where and when? Was she married, had any children.... literally any little clue will be useful - as you go along you will see how true tis is. So get your 'thinking cap' on!

We're all here waiting to help you... giornale

Was Gianina her real name or could it have been Giovanna? Esposito is a tricky name. It was usually given to foundlings so as Carole said, the more you can tell us the more we can steer you in the right direction. I am trying to extract vital records for several towns in Reggio Calabria ( an insane move and slow going process) and if you have an idea of when and where she may have come from, I check my microfilms.

She moved to Malta and married a man on the island of Malta his name was Paolo Tabone

as far as is it her real name I am not sure because my mom told me from memory her name and it was over 20 years after she was told and she may have went by the pronunciation

It seems that she left Italy to avoid the war and I suspect that the rest of my family related to her may have done the same thing like moving to Australia for example. That is only a theory though

all I know is that my Grandfather who died before I was born went back to Italy and could not find them and so they either moved from that area. left the country or they were victims of the war.

The only person that I know of who I can ask is my almost 92 year old grandmother but she speaks Maltese and almost no English and I speak no Maltese ...no one in my family but me has the time to ask her and I live in the USA which makes things much more difficult

is there any easy way to give me scans of those microfilms? If so I could look through them myself for myself

Maybe I could even help you look through them for your research

My grandfather was born in Malta. I do recall my mom saying that my grandfather used to visit the actual city of Reggio Calabria ...the heel of the boot so to speak a lot of times looking for his family with no luck

Sorry for all these posts I am just very frustrated with not having any luck and it was two years since I talked to my mom about this and it's taking a while to remember what I did not have written down

But don't tell anyone, that's when we shoot members!

You just keep the info coming!

I seem to finding the surname very common in Sicily as well as Malta. Did Carmelo die in the US or in Malta? I think we need to work backwards here. The information you are given us is good but there are too many pieces missing so lets start again.

Questions:

1. Did Carmelo Tabone go to the US?
2. If yes, where did he settle? Die?
3. Do you know when Carmelo died?
4. Do you have his death certificate or know where he was buried?
5. Carmela was his wife, born in 1917 so approx. what year do you think he was born?
6. When did they marry? Where?

If you can answer these questions it may help us .. I find a few records but I don't want to post them until I'm sure I am going up the right path.

Nope Carmelo Tabone died in Malta before my birthrate of July 21st 1975

Sadly he died of a nasty heart disease that formed a hole in his heart. One of my aunts died the same way on the same side of my family ...

The only time that Carmelo Tabone ever went to the USA was on vacation to visit his family and the same goes for Carmela

Carmela was born in April 1917 in Malta ...she did not die then ...she is still perfectly alive in Malta at 91 years old. she is a very healthy woman still

I can give you more details when I know them ...I am trying to get my family to interview my grandmother Carmela

my aunt that died of the heart disease was Carmelo and Carmela's daughter ...was born and died in Malta at a young age ...unfortunately at a much younger age than my grandfather died at. I do not think that she even lived to see her teens

I think you need to look at English records. I believe that's where Carole was successful with some of her information when trying to locate and ancestor for Malta.

When did Carmelo Tabone visit the US..what year? Maybe that ship manifest is on line. Unfortunately, the ship manifests, even on ancestry, stop after 1957 so it gets tricky.

Another option may be to write to Malta directly for his information..his death certificate may be a good place to start.

Not sure if this link will help you but its worth a try to read it over...

My grandfather went to the USA on vacation with an airplane.

thanks although 1st I should see how accurate my moms info was from family in Malta

a Paolo Anastasi is on my dads side of the family (my dads grandfather) and I am starting to think that there is no Paola Tabone on my moms side of the family

Maybe I have been failing at finding anything because of misinformation

This link, from a British genealogy site that I belong to has details about Malta.

>Malta National Archives<

I believe that you can also order certificates ON LINE for about
4 Maltese Lira is currently US$13.62 or £7.86

Hope it helps
