Hi; I added this question to the end of my 1st post, but since it was added later maybe it was missed. Can anyone tell me what my original family name IEMMA translates to in English It was changed tp YEMMA in America but that was much later. I have looked on every site i can think of including the ones listed here, but no luck. It may not mean anything or just be a local name but I would like to know. Thanx in advance Johnnie

Hi Johnnie,
Well I thought that as the 'I' and 'Y' in Italian is called the 'long i' it is often written as a 'J' and searching on that basis this is what l I found - I translated what was written for you:

IEMMA
IEMME
IEMMI
JEMMA
JEMMI IEMMA
(vedi GEMMA)

JEMMI IEMMA is distributed from the province of Rome to that of Reggio Calabria with a branch also in Palermo, IEMME Isvery rare, IEMMI is specifically Reggiano, JEMMAis extremely rare, more probably from the meridione, but with a branch also in the Marche and JEMMI, also very rare, is from the central western zone of Emilia, they shouuld all derive from modifications of meioeval name of GEMMA (see GEMMA)

GEMMA has a branch in the Mantova area, one in the LA SPEZIA area, another in the NEAPOLITAN area, one in the CATANIA area, and a large nucleus in LAZIO and on in Puglia, in particular in SALENTO, it should derive from thelate medioeval latin GEMMA of which we we have an examplein this act from the year 955 compied in the Cava dei Tirreni: ".. seu hominem nostrum, qui ibidem fuerit ad omnem suum spendium, et sortionem nostra de nominatum vinum illis nobis adduceret, usque dum illud posuerimus infra nominatum locum nuceria. nam si infra predictum constitutum, predicta Gemma uxor mea fuerit defuncta, et nos vel nostris heredes terra ipsa recolligere voluerimus, licentiam habeamus illam ad nostram recolligere potestatem ..".

Sorry - the last bit is in Latin and I can't translate that....but Luca or Livio will probably be able to help with that for you
