Hey Everyone,
In doing some research lately, I have noticed that my Ancestors' home town of Modica is sometimes listed as being in the province of Siracusa and sometimes listed as being in the province of Ragusa. Did the provinces change at some point or was a new one created perhaps? I'm not so good with my Sicilian history, so if anyone has any ideas, I'm all ears!

Hi JB5150,
I've been to Modica a few times, beautiful town. I always remember being part of Ragusa province. So I asked my father-in-law (who happens to be from Siracusa) said it's Ragusa.

Yes, most of the more modern records I have found indicate Ragusa, but I was looking at some from the early 1800's the other day that said "Siracusa"

Ragusa is the youngest province in Sicily. When it was formed in 1926, it took adminstrative control of Modica. Before this, all of southern Sicily was under Siracusa.

I have the same problem as you JB. My family records (1700's-199?) all say Catanzaro province but in the early 1990's (I believe) my families town's became part of Vibo Valentia province.
