My grandmother, Maria Giglio was born on October 27, 1893 in Belsito. Her birth certificate lists her father as Emiddio which is typed and under the typed name, it says Emillio. I have been told by family members that his name was John Emillio Giglio.

Searching ancestry.com, I have not been able to find any information about him.

Any help, suggestions, advice, would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Interesting, especially the spelling of his first name. My grandmother would have been about 5 years old at this time. It is possible, but kind of unlikely, that he would have come to the U.S. and then gone back to Italy.

Thank you for finding the information. I appreciate it.

If I'm not mistaken the registration for the draft is automatically registered based on the birthyear. It doesn't necessarily mean he served - just that he was registered.

This Emmiddio made a number of trips between Italy and the US with a number of final destinations as Chicago. Any chance you Emmiddio travelled back and forth to earn money?

I'm sure you're correct. All males were registered shortly after their births.

Since I don't know anything about my great grandfather, I guess it is possible that he traveled back and forth. Was it not expensive to travel abroad back then? Very interesting. I'm wondering though why my grandmother never mentioned the fact that her father traveled to the U.S. and made several trips. This is very interesting.

Did you find manifests that list him making several trips? Thanks so much.

If this is indeed the same person, then he had made several trips:

The first, Emidio Giglio, arriving May 19, 1893 when he was 25 and listing he was from Belsito. The second, was when he was 31, Emiddio Giglio, arriving October 2, 1899. This listing said he was married and had been in the U.S. before, possibly 1894, which would probably coincide with the first visit.

Another listing, Eniddi Giglio, born abt. 1865, arriving April 21, 1904, making him about 39 at this trip. It is stated on the manifest that he is a Laborer and can't read or write. Does not say he was from Belsito, just Italy. It does state he was married.

Then another listing I found was for Emiddio Giglio, born abt. 1868, making him 45 on this trip from Naples to Boston to Chicago arriving November 14, 1913.

Now I just need to figure out if this is the same person and if he is indeed my great grandfather.

My ggf made several trips back and forth to the US to earn money before the family eventually settled in the U.S. I believe this was a fairly common practice.

Just to take a small issue with military registration in Italy. What I have learned is that, in the Campania area of Italy, the males register when they turn 18. At least there they were not automatically registered.

The above reason is why I had a hard time finding the males in my family since they moved prior to my great uncles turning 18. They did register in another area at the appropriate time though.

Really? I had done some research for a politician not too long ago for his great grandfather who although was living in the US at the time he turned 18 was already registered for the draft in Italy. I wonder if someone registered him.

MLZaino - just a side note - my ancestors on my maternal side were from Belsito/Malito as well. We should compare surnames.

Hi Nuccia. I am sure you are right. It did happen that they were registered based on their birth date. The individuals I spoke about were born 1840-1852 and well before the military registration of I think 1865. All but those born 1840 and 1841 were then required to register. Also, by 1865, they were living elsewhere when they were required to register than the comune they were born in which made it very difficult to locate their liste di leva. Not even the Salerno Archives had any record. I did find them in the Napoli Archives instead in spite of the fact they registered in Castellammare di Stabia.

Isn't genealogy fun! Very Happy

It's definitely fun - and interesting. Love the fact that we can learn from each other. Experiences are different for everyone so it's nice to share. Thanks again. Smile

A second draft registration:

SIAS Code IT-ASCS-F680258
Ufficio Leva della Provincia di Cosenza, Enlistment year 1868.Volume number 93-BIS,
document number 106 page 221 section a
Emiddio Giglio, contadino enlisted on --/--/----
born on 24/08/1868
son/daughter of Ignoto Ignoto and of Ignota Ignota

Notes: Comune di nascita estero. No admin. codice richiesta 2868 eliminazione idregistro 1002 di banca data perche duplicato addi spostato su registro 177

www.gentedimareitalian...Giglio.jpg

If you join the Cosenza archive site you can actually order this online for a very small amount (I actually got mine free because they sent them anyway before I had to pay). If you write to Belsito you will need to write the letter in Italian.

Thank you Nuccia. That's really a find. What is the link for the Cosena Archive? Appreciate your help.

Where it lists the mother and father's names, why are the first and last names the same? This seems a little weird.
