Hi,
I am trying to find genealogical information regarding my great-grandmother, Maria Perri, born ~1859 (or maybe 1871). I believe that she was from somewhere in Calabria, but eventually moved to Pignataro Maggiore in Caserta. She married Michele Barbato. As a widow, she emigrated to Syracuse NY to be with her son, Francesco Barbato (my grandfather). Maria Barbato died in 1943 in Cortland NY, where I live. Her death certificate does not provide much genealogical infomation. Any help about who I can contact to find out more about her life (birth, parents, siblings, etc.) would be much appreciated.
Thanks!

There are tips on finding the town of origin on my website, however you do have a brick wall here I suspect that will require some expert advice.

Hi Mike,
Have you tried this website? It has Italian birth, marriage and death records. Smile

Mike,

I also checked the Pignataro Maggiore marriages for Michele Barbato/Maria Perri from 1877-1886 and did not find a record. Since marriages usually took place in the bride's hometown, as you mentioned this would indicate that Maria was not from Pignataro.

From the US census records I found, they showed Maria arrived in the US about 1908. However, she is not listed on census records with son Frank in 1915 or 1920. The first census I found her living with Frank was on the 1925 NY census in Syracuse. So, if she arrived in 1908 where was she before joining Frank? With another one of her children? I'm going to check to see if I can find Maria's ship manifest and see if it might hold any other clues.

you need to request Father Michele's birth record from the town. It should (if you are lucky) give the date and place of his marriage to Maria.

Thank you Biff and Ann. I have most of those records, but do not have Michele's birth certificate (should be around 1861?). I agree that it may be very helpful to learn more about Michele. His wife, Maria Perri, I think was from Calabria (if I had to guess, I would say Falerna). Her birth certificate (1859? --although her death certificate says 1871) would be helpful, as would their marriage certificate, as you say. I cannot read Italian, so I truly appreciate your interpretations. For example, I did not know that Michele died at 6:30 PM. I appreciate ALL of your help! What I can discover from here in America is very limited. Thank you! Mike Barbato

Ann, how do I request a birth record for Michele Barbato from the town (Pignataro Maggiore)? Thanks, Mike

It was on the 1930 census. See line 41 under the column immigration year.
