So sorry to tax you but I cannot resist this. I found a website that actually contained information on the family of Sister Elena Aiello a cousin of my grandfather (actually, the niece of his grandmother). Her father, I believe made the suit Domenico Garrafa was wearing in the picture Liz fixed. Anyway, the section of the webpage is huge - I cannot ask that much but I see familiar names here and would like a loose interpretation of what it says - an exact translation is not necessary. Thanks so much.

Pasquale Aiello era annoverato tra i migliori sarti del circondario, con una clientela rispetta­bile fin dalla stessa Cosenza.

L'avv. Di Napoli lo descrive: « Bell'uomo; di una probità eccezionale; squisito nei modi; appa­riva ed era un perfetto gentiluomo; rispettava ed era rispettato ».

Nella bottega, al piano terra della sua abita­zione (mentre il piano di sopra era riservato per la famiglia), ferveva il lavoro davvero senza so­sta; sempre numerosi, giovani e ragazzi vi appren­devano il mestiere.

Nel 1905 (1° dicembre) morí, ancor giovane la moglie, Teresa Paglilla, lasciando ben otto fi­gliuoli: Emma, Ida, Elena, Evangelina, Elisa, Ric­cardo, Giovannina e Francesco; un'altra figlia, M. Teresa, era volata al cielo un mese prima, a un solo anno di età. La maggiore, Emma, alla morte della mamma, era ancora giovanetta e Francesco di appena alcuni mesi.

Rifulse allora la virtú di questo umile artigia­no: richiamò in casa tutti i figliuoli, volendo vigi­lare personalmente alla loro formazione sana­mente e integralmente cristiana. Ciascuno di essi aiutava, adeguatamente all'età e alle altre occu­pazioni peculiari, il genitore nel suo lavoro.

Nato a Montalto il 22-2-1861, maestro Pasqua­le vi morí, ultraottuagenario (16-11-1955), conti­nuando nel suo lavoro, fin quasi al termine della sua fruttuosa giornata, sempre assistito dalla primogenita, signorina Emma, tanto riservata e tanto cara.

Elena, la terzogenita, alla morte della mamma era nel suo 11° anno, e alcuni mesi prima era stata cresimata da S. Ecc. Mons. Sorgente (187-­1911), nella Cappella della Marchesa Donna Ama­lia Spada, madrina Donna Agnesina Turano.

Aveva manifestato subito una intelligenza sve­glia: a quattro anni ripeteva già le formule del catechismo; a sei (1901) è mandata dalle Suore del Preziosissimo Sangue, per frequentare le scuo­le elementari e continuare l'istruzione religiosa.

Nell'istituto delle Suore, la piccola, dopo la preghiera, esprimeva sempre il desiderio di vo­ler assistere alla S. Messa; ma nell'Istituto non ogni mattina veniva celebrato il S. Sacrificio e la piccola Elena, quando poteva, eludendo con relativa facilità la vigilanza della Suora preposta, scappava nella vicina Chiesa per soddisfare il suo vivo desiderio. Le capitò in una di queste scappa­te, di cadere per terra, mentre si affrettava verso la Chiesa, e di ferirsi con un vetro al labbro supe­riore; a casa, dove alcuni passanti la portarono, il medico di famiglia, dott. Adolfo Turano, richiu­se con qualche punto la ferita.

Rientrando a casa, dopo la scuola, aiutava anche lei, sotto la guida della sorella, nel co­mune lavoro di cucito.

Pasquale Aiello was born in Montalto on 22-2-1861 and died in Montalto on 16 nov 1955. He was one of the best tailors ion Montalto. He was married to Teresa Paglilla who died on Dec 1, 1905. They had 9 children: Emma, Ida, Elena, Evangelina, Elisa, Ric­cardo, Giovannina, Francesco e M. Teresa. M Teresa did in early Nov 1905 when she was 1 year old. Elena was 11 when her mother died.
