I am researching surnames Capobianco and Zavaro. I don't know what region...all I know is the Capobianco family is listed in the 1910 U.S. Census with the father Matteo having been born in Italy abt 1880, and arrived in U.S. in 1900. The oldest 2 children with last name Zavaro who also were born in Italy in 1902 and 1904 so am guessing the mother was married to a Zavaro before Capobianco, but of course don't know for sure. I can't find on the internet where either name is a typical Italian name...? I'd appreciate any help anyone can give me.

Ellen in U.S.

I will add the names to the surname database Jerry. I just updated it on the weekend so it may not be for a few weeks. I'll try to remember to let you know when I've done it, ok?

His WW1 Draft Card:

World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918
about Dimeneco Sole
Name: Dimeneco Sole
County: Fayette
State: West Virginia
Birthplace: Italy
Birth Date: 1889
Race: Italian
Roll: 1992386
DraftBoard: 2

Clearly lists Catanzaro as his hometown. More and more I am starting to think writing to Catanzaro Comune a good idea.

I can not link the manifest but he states he was born in Mesuraca on this one, and that he is leaving his wife, Giacinata and going to his cousin in West Virginia. Hopefully someone can link for you.

If worse come to worse, you could try writing to the Archives in Catanzaro for his military draft registration records. That should list his birth place if I am not mistaken. Here's where we need our Italian friends to help.

MariLouise,

Your paternal grandfather was from Catanzaro? I am looking at his ship manifest as if I am reading it correctly, looks like it says he was born in Seminara (which is close to Soverato)

First Name: Domenico
Last Name: De Sole
Ethnicity: Italy
Last Place of Residence: Mesuraca, It.
Date of Arrival: Apr 03, 1910
Age at Arrival: 20Y Gender: M Marital Status: S
Ship of Travel: Principe De Piemonte
Port of Departure: Napoli
Manifest Line Number: 0020

Leaving sister Giuseppina behind, going to meet brother Francesco.

Looks like he may have been sent back so there must be another ship manifest we need to look for (if this is him).

Good luck on your latest try MariLouise... do keep us updated.

Why not list the names you are researching as part of your 'signature' - that way anybody - even visitors can see and you never know (it HAS happened) someone might recognise one of your names. If you notice, we all do this, so why not you too..

(BTW I haven't forgotten that I still owe you an answer via e-mail!)

My grandfather (my father's father), Domenico De Sole, was born in Santa Severina on July 7, 1889. He emigrated to the states in 1910. He was married to Assunta Giacinto (from Crotone) on February, 1913 in Mesoraca in the province of Catanzaro. I think my grandmother was an orphan. I believe he had one or two brothers and a sister. They had settled in West Virginia, then my grandfather moved to Youngstown, Ohio to work on the railroad. His siblings moved back to Italy (at least a brother, who died there). I had originally gotten a statement of No Record from Mesoraca regarding his birth certificate and am currently waiting to hear from Santa Severina.
