I have re-started researching the Family Tree that I started in the late 90's. Once I reach the Ellis Island and the Italy search I reach a block. I have input all my data into Roots Magic.

Listed in the subject line are the names I have come up with on my Mother's side. My mother was born Teresa Russo in Phila. Her father was named Guiseppe Russo, born 2-20-1895 in Italy, died 4-20-1984 in New Jersey. He emigrated sometime before 1920 because he married in Feb. 1920 in Phila., PA. Guiseppe's parents were Antonio Russo & Teresa or Mary Basile.

Her mother was Filomena Molinaro(i). Born 6-1-1900 in Italy, died 2-20-1973 in NJ. She emigrated sometime before 1920 because he married in Feb. 1920 in Phila., PA. Filomena's parents were Peter/Pietro Molinaro(i) and Angelina Scalesi (DOD 11-24-1944 in either Phila. or NJ). Filomena lived in Serrastretta, Catanzaro, Italy.

I do not have the town/s where they were born or the year the emigrated from Italy. I believe they initially lived the Calabria region.

Can anyone point me in the right direction. I have been on the Ellis Island website, but I find it difficult to pinpoint who I am looking for.

I found the 1920 census for the family but Pietro is not listed. It lists Palma Molinari as sister (but the surname might be Scalesi) so I'm not sure if it's Pietro's sister or Angelina's sister. Also lists their citizenship as 1914 except for the oldest son, Natale......his is listed as 1906.

I haven't had any luck locating ships manifests for anyone yet....still trying.

I looked at the page you sent and I think it's them. Angelina & Peter had 4 children, my grandmother Filomena (1900), Natale (1-1-1894), Antonio, & Mary. The names & ages look right, except Mary is missing. Mary could have been living someplace else in 1920.

If this is them, this is really, really great.

Thank you, thank you, mille grazie.

I just showed this to my Mother. Palma was Angelina's sister. And in looking through my software, Mary was probably married before 1920, as her first child was born in 1918.

Thank you again.

Mary's first child was born 1918? think I thought Mary was Giuseppe's mom and he was born 1895 Shocked

Let me know who Mary having a child in 1918 is Wink

And......do you know if Giuseppe Russo had any brothers or sisters....please give names and approximate years of births. Thanks

Smile

In researching my Family Tree I am finding many people, on both sides have the same first names. LOL It makes it confusing.

Guiseppe's (my Grandfather) mother's name was either Mary or Theresa. Also, Filomena (my Grandmother) had a sister named Mary. This is the Mary that had a child in 1918.

Guiseppe has brothers & sisters. I can get you that information later on today. Off the top of my head I can tell you that they are: Vicenzo, Francesco, Marianna, & Maddelena.

Francesco ended up in Detroit. One of the sisters ended up in California. The other sister went back to Italy.

I'll send you more info later on today.

My great-grandmother Caterina Scalise was born in 1887 in Serrastretta. I would adjust your records to reflect that spelling, if they were from Serrastretta, the spelling is with an "e" and not an "i".

When you get a little further back let me know, I have scanned the marriages for Serrastretta before 1860 and Cathy hosts them on her "Catanzaro Exchange" Website.

Good luck!

Jim

The birth years of Giuseppes siblings would be a great help. We might be able to find manifests through them.

Jim:

Thanks for the information. I will try that. maybe we are related.

Billie:

Here's the information you requested:

Guiseppe's siblings are:
Vicenzo - Born 4-5-1893 in Italy. He married on 2-21-1925 in Phila.
Francesco - Born 2-11-1898 in Italy. he ended up in Detroit
Marianna - I have no information
Madellena - I have no information. But she married someone with the last name of Gonino. They had 5 children: Maria, Peppino, Carmela, Angelina, & Rosario. I have no information on any of these.

One of the sisters came to the US but went back to Italy.

I found Natale Molinaro at Ellis Island arriving on July 13, 1909.

He is listed as being born in Serrastretta, son of Angelina Scalise. His relative in the US was listed as Natale Scalise.

I'll keep looking for the others.

Hi Jack:

The age could be right. I looked up the ship for that date and see that he is traveling without his brothers & sisters. This could be him, but I'm not sure.

Thanks for the information.
