#1: Designation after name of father on birth record Author: JB5150Location: Florida PostPosted: Mon May 03, 2010 11:06 pm

Hi Everyone!

First off, I must apologize for being gone for so long. It has been ages since I have posted, but I'm getting back into doing research again and I know you all are the go-to folks for Italian genealogy questions.

That said, I am wondering if someone can clear something up for me.

My great-grandfather's birth certificate states:

"L’anno 1881 l’undici settembre …è comparso Francesco Aquilino [ di Santo]di anni 50 di professione bracciale domiciliato in Fossato il quale ci ha dichiarato che il dì otto del corrente mese nella casa in Fossato , da Pasqualina Tripodi sua moglie legittima, è nato un bambino….a cui ha dato il nome di CARMELO AQUILINO."

My question is this-- After Francesco's name it says "di Santo." Does that mean that his father's name was Santo? If not, what does this mean?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Yeah, I would say that Francesco was the son of Santo.

Thanks, Livio! Any chance you want to take a stab at this one? I apologize for the terrible quality of the copy. After the name of the father (Luigi Barone), it says "di" and something I can't quite make out. I always thought it said "di lei marito" but I can't quite be sure. If it is his father's name, I would love to know but I just can't determine what it would be if it is a name. Any idea?

You are correct, it says "...e da Luigi Barone di lei marito di anni 38...". Luigi is the father and he is the husband of Carmela Cannata (sp?).

Oh and in case you weren't aware - di means living, fu means deceased so in both these case the person referred to as "di" was alive at the time the event took place.

Am I correct, Livio?

Nuccia, you are correct "di" and "fu" indicate if a person is son or daughter of a living person or of a deceased person, however it does not apply here.
In this case "di lei" = "suo", "di lei marito" = "suo marito", her husband

Thanks for all the extra information-- you guys are such a great help!

I have one more question (not related to the original one). I'm sending away for some copies of records, but I'm a little confused about the instructions. Here's what the archives office said:

Qualora si volesse la spedizione della copia dei relativi atti
ritrovati è necessario inviare l’equivalente di 10 € in
cartamoneta o inviare un vaglia postale indirizzato a “Ufficio
postale via S. Caterina N°. 6 Reggio Calabria” per le spese postali
e quelli di fotocopiatura. Si prega di scrivere esattamente
l’indirizzo a cui inviarli.

What I'm wondering is, do I only send to the address above if I am sending a money order, or would I send cash to that address as well? (The reason I ask, is because it seems like the physical address of the archives is something else). I guess I am confused about why I would be sending this to the post office in RC. Do they accept the mail for the state archives or something?

You have 2 options:
1 - send a banknote of 10 € to the Archivio di Stato (the same address you have used for your correspondence)
2 - Send an international money order through the Post Office. In this case the you need to indicate that the Archivio di Stato will get the money at the “Ufficio
postale via S. Caterina N°. 6 Reggio Calabria”

Option 1 is the simplest although there is risk that the banknote will be stolen...

Hi!!!
I'm Aquilino Federico and i live in Turin, but my father come from Fossato Jonico. If your great great grandfather was Aquilino Francesco we are relatives!!!

Aquilino Lorenzo (married with Caterina Schimizzi, died in 1808. 80 years old), Aquilino Antonino (married with Saveria Sgrò), Aquilino Santo (born in 1800 and married with Abate Giovanna.

This Aquilino Santo had in particular two sons: Antonino e Francesco. Antonino was my great great grandfather!!! We are far relatives!! Smile

It's quite sure that our surname come from Sicily (in 1597 Aquilino Giovanni Battista married Carnazzo Minichella in Reggio Calabria....this Aquilino came from Messina)

If you want to Know other things i'm here!! Wink

Bye

Hi Federico!

Wow, yes, I think we are related! Smile

I am the daughter of George Barone (b. 1943), who was the son of George Barone (b. 1913) and Pasqualina Aquilino (b. 1914). Pasqualina was born in Fossato Jonico (came to the US in 1926) and her parents were Carmelo Aquilino (b. 1881) and Filomena Mercurio (b. 1889). Carmelo was the son of Francesco Aquilino (b. 1830) and Pasqualina Tripodo (b. 1837). And of course, as you mention, Francesco was the son of Santo Aquilino!

I would love to know more about your research! I traveled to Fossato in 2011 and visited the church there but unfortunately they said they did not have any records of my family. The earliest record I was able to find from the state archives was the birth record of Francesco from 1830. I know he also had a sister named Domenica (b. 1843) but I didn't know about Antonino! Do you have your family tree online anywhere? If you want to send me your email address I can send you an invitation to view my tree.

Thank you for posting--I'm happy to know you!! Smile

Hi!!!

I found online a research made by a dutch scholar who lives in Reggio Calabria. This is the link www.benvanrijswijk.com...ogiche.htm

My family tree is not complete but i can show you a part of it

Lorenzo Aquilino married Caterina Schimizzi
(1728?- 9/4/1808) (Battezzata il 31/1/1735)

their sons:

10/11/1754 Aquilino Giuseppe,
19/1/1757Aquilino Anna Carmina Leonarda,
19/5/1765 Aquilino Domenico Pietro,
18/2/1769 Aquilino Saveria Anna
7/1/1773 Aquilino Paola Giovanna
Aquilino Sebastiano (morto il 25/9/1783 a 24 anni)
E Antonino Aquilino (1768)

Antonino Aquilino (1768-1833) married (8/11/1790) Saveria Sgrò (1761 - 19/8/1841

Sons:

Aquilino Giovanna Francesca Antonina (battesimo il 7/9/1791)
Aquilino Francesco Giovanni (battesimo l’8/11/1793)
Aquilino Anna
Aquilino Santo Francesco (battezzato 22/10/1822 - 1882)
Aquilino Pasquale Saverio (battezzato il 21/5/1804), il quale sposa Giovanna Macheda e battezza il 17/3/1844 Aquilino Saveria
Aquilino Fortunato Antonino Simone (battesimo il 30/10/1796)
Aquilino Pasquale Saverio (battesimo il 21/5/1804.. padrino Saverio Foti)

Santo Francesco Aquilino married Abate Giovanna in 1828

Their sons:

Aquilino Francesco (Battezzato il 6/2/1830)
Aquilino Antonino (Battezzato il 5/1/1835)
Aquilino Maria (Battezzata il 21/12/1838)
Aquilino Domenica (Battezzata il 31/10/1843)

This Francesco is your great great grandfather Smile

Before Aquilino Lorenzo no one Aquilino was in Montebello/Fossato Jonico.

In the other near towns i found other Aquilinos and i think that Lorenzo came frome these towns (i'm not sure 'cause there's not documents)
Maybe Cannavò, Cardeto or the old city of Sant'Agata.

In these documents sometimes Aquilino surname is written in dialect ("Culino" or "Colino"). As i told you i arrived in 1597 when Aquilino Giovanni Battista married Minichella Carnazzo (both coming from Sicily)
In that website you can reseatch what you want Wink
