#1: Looking for great-great-grandfather and his son Author: JamesE PostPosted: Tue Jan 15, 2008 3:03 am

I've come a far way thanks to much help from this board and others but have yet to get back a record from Italy. Here is a little history...

My GG-grandfather Pietro Giallorenzo was born in Italy at an unknown date.. his American marriage certificate lists him as turning 23 at his next birthday in 1879, but his death cert lists him as having died at the age of 49 in 1899. I haven't been able to find anything showing when he came to America, but there is a record at Ellis Island showing his brother, Andrea Giallorenzo coming to visit in 1907. Andrea's record says he is going to visit his nephew, Salvatore Giallorenzo. This is Pietro's son and my great-grandfather. The record even lists his address of 321 East 113th St. NYC, which is 100% sure. It shows Andrea as coming in from Teggiano but when I wrote Teggino asking for Andrea's and Pietro's marriage records for a wide range of years, nothing was found Sad

The record shows Andrea's wife coming from a different city which I have not contacted yet. I will write them soon asking for her birth and possible marriage certificates.

It also says Andrea had visited America before but I can't find any information about the previous visit.

I have the 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930 census record for the family. Sadly since Pietro died in 1899, he is not on any record that I have.

I have written to NYC many times asking for Salvatore's birth certificate for various dates and boroughs but nothing appears. Pietro had 2 other sons, Philip and Joseph. I have not searched for their birth records yet but I do have Philip and Salvatore's WWI/WWII draft registration card, and Joseph's WWI card. Maybe I should search for Philip and Joseph's birth certificates to maybe find more information about Pietro's birth place. However I still don't know what happened to Salvatore's birth certificate... They sometimes go by Giallorenzo and sometimes by Renzo but I have searched both names.

Any advice will be much appreciated! Please let me know if there is anything I can do or more info I can provide to be of help. I'll upload all my documents to a website and post the link soon so that everyone can see what I have and not have to duplicate my research Smile

Thanks a million!!

Hi James and welcome to the forum. I found a Castle Garden manifest that would closely match the age you have listed for his death at age 49

Age 47
Sex M
Literacy U
Arrived 24 Aug 1885
Origin ITALY
Port NAPLES
Last Residence
Destination 7788

I don't know if you've seen this information or not. I'll do some more searching to see what I come up with.

Regards,
Elizabeth

James I'm posting Andrea's 1907 manifest

www.ellisisland.org/EI...&line=0020

This states he is traveling with his wife Teresina Mercadante. It also states he was in USA before and lists a date. I'm not sure if that date is reading 1873 or 1893, but this may be a clue to finding your great grandfather Pietro's arrival records.

Can someone on the forum please check other ports of arrival and see if you can find Andrea's first arrival record and possibly Pietro's too?

Thanks in advance to anyone that can give some help.

Billie

Nuccia.........thank you so much for posting the manifest kiss

James.....I know you have written to the comune making your request and they say they found no documents. The LDS church has microfilms of civil records for birth acts, death and marriages from 1866 through 1910. You may want to order the films and look for possible marriage documents yourself. Here is the link for films..............
www.familysearch.org/E...o+civile++

You will need to locate your nearest Family History Center (FHC), I'm providing the link...........
www.familysearch.org/E...et_fhc.asp

Write down the film numbers you would like to view, go to your FHC and order. The cost is about $5.50 USD per film and takes about 4 weeks to receive.

James.........please take a look at this information and let me know if it is correct.

Marriages of Pietro Giallorenzo and Salvatore Giallorenzo

Giallorenzo Pietro Sep 1 1879 Manhattan 4966 G465 - married to
Astaro Teresina Sep 1 1879 Manhattan 4966 A236
Cactaro Teresina Sep 1 1879 Manhattan 4966 C236

Giallorenzo Salvatore Dec 20'16 1917 Manhattan 1777 G465 - married to
Gidner Helen Dec 20'16 1917 Manhattan 1777 G356

If Pietro was married in the USA then you won't find a marriage for him in Italy unless it got noted on his baptismal record or his records kept by the civil office. Was Pietro married more than once? Maybe once in Italy and once in the USA?

Did Pietro naturalize? If so, his naturalization papers or his petition would (should) list the comune, province and/or region in Italy where he was born.

Thank you so much for the help!!

I don't think the Castle Garden record is for Pietro Giallorenzo because as you show below he was married to Teresina Cestaro (spelled wrong on the site) in 1879. I have that record here:
james-evans.net/geneal...ge%201.jpg
james-evans.net/geneal...ge%202.jpg

Does anyone know where I can find property records?

I have ordered the LDS microfilms and they are at my local center. Smile I am going through them but it is difficult.. next time I am there I will work through them some more and see if I come up with anything. I ordered 4 but only 3 are there.. I think the missing one has the index for some of the ones which are there.

"Marriages of Pietro Giallorenzo and Salvatore Giallorenzo"

This is 100% correct! Here is Salvatore's marriage records:
james-evans.net/geneal...ge%201.jpg
james-evans.net/geneal...ge%202.jpg

I think Pietro was married only once in America. I am looking for his Italian birth record now as well as Salvatore's birth record. They seem hard to find Sad I don't think Pietro naturalized.. but I did find one P Renzo naturalization record through NARA, which does not show much info.
james-evans.net/geneal...zation.jpg

I know Pietro lived at 308 Mott Street in 1879 and 357 East 113th street in 1899 (his death record: james-evans.net/geneal...Death.jpg) Would this help?

Thanks again!! Mr. Green Mr. Green Mr. Green

Hi James

If Pietro and Andrea were born before 1866 you won't find them on the LDS films. Birth years are starting at 1866, however if they married in Italy you should be able to find their marriage records, they span 1875 through 1910.
