I need my great grandfathers birth certificate, however I do not know to much about him. He was born Giuseppe Marciano probably in 1887, he died on Sep 21,1961 in NYC and was naturalized on nov 12 1926 in Schenectady at 39 years old. Where should I start my search for this date?

WOW you are good it sound just like him. I see you have March 4 and 5th for his date of birth. Is there some reason for the 2 dates? Nobody in my family was ever sure of his real birth date. I would also need my great grandmothers area of birth. She was born in Sicily on Nov 11 1895 name Josephine Farone (madien name). Thanks for all your help I think I should be able to get his birth certificate now.

Hello,
if you need his birth certificate, like for citizenship application, you can make a request written only in italian to send to

Comune
Ufficio di Stato Civile
Via del Torrione 2
89100 Reggio Calabria
Italy

If you want the copy from the real birth record, you can rent from FHL the following Reggio Calabria civil record microfilms

Nati 1883-1885; Indice decennale dei nati 1886-1895; Nati 1886-1887
FHL INTL Film 1798158

Nati 1887, 1889-1892 FHL INTL Film 1798259

I hope it helps
bye Riccardo

Thanks, Elizabeth!

I'm having a heck of a time trying to find Giuseppa/Giuseppina's ship manifest. Been checking for Farone, Faraone, Ferone and nothing.

1930 census for Anna Farone widowed living with oldest son Thomas and her children
Name: Anna Farone
Home in 1930: Schenectady, Schenectady, New York
Age: 47
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1883
Relation to Head of House: Mother
Household Members: Name Age
Thomas Farone 24
Anna Farone 47
Dom Farone 20
Helen Farone 17
Fred Farone 15
Joseph Farone 11
George Farone 8
Margarett Farone 5

Possible 1930 census for Joseph Marciano family
Name: Jos Marciano
Home in 1930: Brooklyn, Kings, New York
Age: 42
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1888
Birthplace: Italy
Relation to Head of House: Head
Spouse's Name: Josephine
Race: White
Household Members: Name Age
Jos Marciano 42, barber, immigration 1911?, naturalized
Josephine Marciano 33, born Conn?
Angela Marciano 15
Anna Marciano 13
Joseph Marciano 11
Charles Marciano 9

This looks like the same family as the 1920 census except for Josephine's birth place and Joseph's year of immigration.

Hey Biff .......... check this out and see if it's a winner for Giuseppa Farone manifest. From Reggio Calabria

page 1
www.ellisisland.org/EI...;line=0026

Page 2
www.ellisisland.org/EI...;line=0026

Edit to add comment ...... I've found several Giuseppina Faraone (Farone) manifests from Sicily but the ages are off based on the 1895 year of birth given.

Let me know what you think.

Thanks, Elizabeth

If the 1910 census I posted is correct, Giuseppina was in the US prior to 1913. There's the chance that father Charles emigrated first and children followed later with their mother. If that's the case, they might be listed under the mother's maiden name. Since Giuseppina had a sister Rosa/Rose born in Italy on the 1910 census, both she and her sister should be on the same manifest travelling with father and/or mother.

I found a tree on ancestry (unsourced and with obvious errors) that gives mother Anna's surname as Bologna but based on the errors I found on the tree, I'm not giving it much credence. There was also another tree which shows Anna's surname as Brogna.

Biff

Approximate birth year of Charles based on the 1910 census is 1875
Approximate birth year of Anna based on the 1910 census is 1880
Approximate birth year of Josephine based on the 1910 census is 1893

Census shows Charles arriving in 1897 and Anna and Josephine arriving in 1898, no year listed next to Rosa. Confused

This would make Anna about 13 years old when she had Josephine Shocked Shocked
Even using the year of 1895 for Josephines birth (from poster) puts Anna's age at 15 when Josephine was born.

Approximate birth year of Anna based on the 1930 census is 1883.

I've been searching high and low using all different options and still coming up empty. I'll keep searching (I love a good mystery).

Very Happy

My mother had told me that she had found my great grandmothers name at ellis island engraved on the wall or stone, but when I searched for it on there web page she was not there. She did come over in 1897 and was born in 1895. Her mothers name was Anna. And my family always knew that my great grandfather was around 10 years older or so then Josephine but werent sure until I found out his actual birthdate. I'll try to find out more info from my mother. Thanks for everyones help

Does someone in your family happen to have your great grandmothers naturalization papers or your grandmothers naturalization papers? It would list the ship she was on which might be helpful.

That would be great, if you can scan and post it that would be the best. If you can't do that copy all the info down, spouses name, children, birthdate, year of nat. etc. That would really help us out.
